Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

I finally got around to removing the rear roll pan the PO had on my K5. I ordered some aftermarket brackets and a gravel guards from GMCPaul's. Bolted up the brackets, which took longer than I expected because of the tight spaces. I had to unbolt the gas tank skid plate too.

The brackets seem off. The outer brackets seem to long. The inner "L" brackets don't even make contact when I tried to mock up the bumper for figment purposes. The bumper makes contact with the body so the outer brackets are able to bolt on.

Another weird thing is the gravel guard holes only line up with inner "L" brackets and not the outer brackets.

Are these the wrong brackets or am I just a newbie dumbass who can't figure out this simple task?

I can't see how these might be backwards.

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

The "L" brackets do have another hole. If bolted it from that hole then I would imagine they would stick out way to far and I wouldn't be able to bolt the second bolt way in the back.

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

This is what the gravel guards are doing. I'm out of time today for working on the K5 and this issue is driving me insane. There is no way the "L" bracjet need to come out further because then the gravel guards wouldn't tuck under the body.

This no "SEARCH" function isn't making problems easier either. Wish they would hurry up and resolve the issue.

Are these original gravel guards? If not, that may be your problem

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

The brackets and gravel guards are all aftermarket. At this point the gravel guards are the least of my worries. I can't get the bumper near the inner brackets. The bumper makes contact with the outer brackets first and there is about a 1/2 inch of space to the bumper and the inner brackets. Plus the bumper actually makes body contact to get to the outer brackets. No idea what I'm doing wrong. I have nothing to fall back on. My K5 never had a bumper on it when I bought it. Pictures would be helpful. I would use the "Search" function but it's disabled.

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

Maybe you were shipped brackets for a coil spring C10? I don't know, it's hard to tell how you have it mounted to the truck. Any others pics of that?

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

These are the brackets I bought from GMCPaul. Wondering what the holes in the middle are for in the inner "L" brackets. My K5 only has holes for the outer most holes on each end.

Shouldn't that mean that it fits the K5?

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

i emailed GMCPaul about the gravel guard fitting issue. I received a reply this morning. The gravel guards are for FLEETSIDE and STEPSIDE TRUCKS. They need to be modified to fit the K5.

One mystery solved, on to the next issue.

Re: Rear Bumper Bracket Issues

Received second email from GMCPaul cornering the brackets. They claimed I only needed the outer brackets because my K5 should have frame horns and if it didn't they must have been cut off. I know that only the 72 should have the frame horns. This email was from Danielle. I replied that my K5 was a 71 and it didn't have frame horns. Needless to say I began to loose faith in GMCPaul staff for their lack of knowledge of the K5.

I then received another email from Paul Jr. and he claimed some early 71 K5s have no frame horns and later 71 K5s have frame horns. My 71 K5 was born on June 71 as per the decal on the door jam and I have no frame horns. He further claimed to his knowledge nobody makes an inner brackets that don't need to be modified for the 69-71 K5s. This doesn't sound right. Needless to say, I should have just called Wes.

Learning everyday. Thanks for schooling me.

Looks like I managed to order all the wrong parts. Seems only the outer brackets don't need to be modified. I was looking for plug and play parts. Who sells these?

I buy many parts from the board. I have been looking, but nothing has come up. I became impatient to get my bumper on and ordered aftermarket. Would love to you use the "Search" function, but it has been disabled for about 3 weeks already.

I actually made it home earlier today so I rolled the torch out and cut an access hole in the c channel the PO installed. I can try and get some better pictures did not want to melt my phone tonight.

This weekend if the weather is nicer I can remove some more of the c channel and try and get you a measurement of the inside bracket from the end to the mounting hole.
