Do I need a 1 or 2 ton cherry picker to do a engine swap on my Silverado?

Re: Engine Swap
1 ton is fine but if its a crappy quality beware the bolts and keep an eye on the hydraulic ram.

Re: Engine Swap
A fully dressed small block is around 575lbs, so 1-ton should be dandy.

Re: Engine Swap
In my research a lot of members like the 4 wheel engine stands over the 3 wheelers for safety. Some feel the 3 wheelers are more prone to tipping. I haven't bought one yet myself.

Re: Engine Swap
The problem I have found with these cheap engine stands is that they can't be turned over because of to much weight. As you can see here.
Do you think if I put grease in to it the crank will turn so I can work on the oil pan bolts? |

Re: Engine Swap
Any of the basic stands are bad about rotating when there is a alot on the motor. Bare block turns great, but when you slap heads on they get hard to turn. Grease will help I'm sure. The 1000 pound stands with the four legs are far superior to the three leg. I almost tipped a 3 leg one time, could've been bad.
I really want one of the nice expensive ones with the screw type/hand crank rotating system. They are pushin $200 dollars if not more.

Re: Engine Swap
I've got a 4 wheel stand that I like, and it has the same rotating head design as yours. I wrote "grease me" on the pipe with a sharpie to remind myself to put grease in there before hanging an engine on it. The grease does help. I also have a 3 foot bar I use for turning the engine over. The 1 foot that came with the stand is a joke (maybe an aluminum 4 banger).

Re: Engine Swap
Use the picker to turn the engine.
