Driver Side Mirror Install

I have a 66 SWB, and I'm sure this topic has been addressed a million times before, but for some reason I can't really find the answer I'm looking for. Currently I don't have a driver side mirror, so I just bought one from LMC. Came with the arm, gasket, and screws. http://www.lmctruck.com/features/cbe/CBEMIQ.htm

Not sure I understand, but am I not supposed to use a washer and nut for the screws? Am I supposed to just drill a small pilot hole and screw them in without a nut inside the door? Have any of you guys done it this way with success?
thanks as always for the help. Clint

Re: Driver Side Mirror Install

There should be nuts welded to the inside of door. The trick is finding them and drilling the holes in the right spot. Someone wrote a previous thread on this. Maybe he will chime in. I know it involved skinny arms and a lot of patience.

Go inside door, there should be posts. Use a spring type punch, push and it pops. Or the like. Drill small holes, then step up size for screw head.

Re: Driver Side Mirror Install

Drivers side holes are probably filled with Bondo but there are 5/16 nuts in the door .
Use you best imagination to find them. Actually make a template off another truck door or someone can maybe provide a template. Drill the Bondo out with a small dill and just run a 5/16 tap through the threads.

Just done this very job but on the passenger side.

As LV mentioned, you will need a punch and some plasters. The plasters will become apparent once you start....

Have a look at my build thread for a little more info.

Lightbulb Re: Driver Side Mirror Install

take the door panel off and shine a flashlight up into that area where the mirror should be mounted and you will see the nuts welded on up there. If you have a right angle drill you may be able to drill a small pilot hole from the backside through the welded on nut...if not, the template from post 2 can be your guide for drilling, just reverse it and use small drill first to gauge location.

Re: Driver Side Mirror Install

I found them on my 66 by pulling the door panel and looking inside. They had bondo worms hanging out them. I plucked out the worms and used a 90 degree head on my dremel to drill a small hole from inside and finish up from outside. On my 65 they had screws in the holes and ground them off flush and filled with bondo. I could see the screws from inside the door. I used a template I found on line to locate the screws and slowly dug out the heads. They were the factory screws and came out with out a lot of trouble.
