Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
I put a set of those split 17's on my 62 C20 and they look great wearing tall/skinny Michelin tires. just sayin.
Got any 63 and up 19.5 eight luggers? |

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
Don't wanna hijack a thread, but it may actually help sell his wheels, so ok.
Whatcha think, chrome or painted caps? Painted is more correct for my trim level. |

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
That looks great Bruce ! Any issues getting tires mounted or did you do it yourself ? I think a thread on this might prove as a positive for these rims.

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
Thanks Guys. Actually I think it was Aerotruk63 that alerted me to a local (L.A.) CL ad for the complete set of rims, mounted tires, and caps. Just another example of why he and other helpful members make this site so worthwhile.

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
This practically forgotten 17" wheel and your '62 deserves a thread on the main forum. It really helps when you can find them already mounted on good tires, because the extra cost to dismount-mount-liner-tube ( at a truck tire dealer only), not to mention price of 17" tires, is very cost prohibitive to many 3/4 ton owners.

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
I've never had a problem finding someone to work on split rims. The chain stores won't touch them, but the mom-and-pop shops that have been around for a while will still do it.

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
That is what cages were made for. Shame on the tire store they should have trained their workers in the proper way of changing split rims and using the cage when they are aired up.

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
It's a sad story regardless, but you're right. Truth is there are a lot of machines out there that will take a bite out of you or kill you if you don't know your way around them. The only way that rim came apart is if it wasn't assembled properly. I'm sure Pep Boys had to open their wallet for the family.

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
Were cages around 30 years ago? or was that why they came up with the cages? I have never seen any cages at tire stores myself...

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
It seems like every time multipiece wheels are discussed on this forum, the term split rim gets tossed around. A split rim wheel ( used only on 1 1/2 trucks) is a different design than lock ring wheels ( used on pickups and 2 ton and larger trucks). It would be nice to know the facts of which design wheel exploded. The lock ring wheel gets a bad rap because of the poorer design split rim wheel. In many cases, the wheel was not assembled correctly or the wheel had mis matched parts or damaged parts. This is something that only a trained truck tire dealer should deal with. Does anybody really think the engineers who designed multipiece wheels would release them to the public if they were exploding time bombs?

Re: F/S 17" 8 lug wheels
I have some from the 50's and I think a few from the 60's that are like the ones posted in this thread I can not use the ones from later ones on my 52 Chevrolet one ton because they would rub the bed on the sidewall when loaded or when chained up I don't remember maybe the spacing is different ? I can get some pictures and try to post them if your interested ?
