14 bolt Drum Seized

Just picked up a 78 K30 and the passenger rear drum is stuck something good. I have beat on him with BFH and heated it up with a rosebud. ..and have sprayed wd40 and a mixture of ATF and acetone. Axle shaft has been removed as well. Even tried to pull it off with chain and truck! NOTHING has worked. Seems to be stuck towards the top of the drum. Any ideas or suggestions? ?? Thanks in advance

Do you have the drum and the hub of the truck? You should just have to press the studs out of the hub/drum and they will come apart. Unless its a later rear axle with slip on drums then you should just need to back the brakes off if there is a lip worn into the drum so you can slide it over the shoes. You should post a pic

So you have the spindle nuts off then? Did the outter bearing come out if you move the hub up and down? If the outter bearing is off then maybe the inner one spun on the spindle? Even then you should still be able to pull the hub and drum off the wheel seal and inner bearing without to much trouble. Will the hub turn at all?

The bearing that is visible from the outside has not came out which I thought that bearing has to come out from the inside of the hub?? Yes I removed the 2 spindle nuts and washer. The hub/drum will not turn a bit but it seems a little loose pulling side to side and at the bottom but seems stuck towards the top center area...as far as I can tell at least.

I had this same problem on my 14 bolt. the axle seal leaked gear oil on the shoes and its locked on there like you wouldn't believe. first of all, BOTH the bearings in the hub are removed through the inner part of the hub, the outer bearing does not come out the outside like on a front hub. you can remove the spindle nut and that will release the hub from the spindle. you can use a punch or a brass hammer to drive the wheel studs into the drum and separate the hub from the drum. the drum is mounted behind the hub so you should be able to do this without too much trouble. from then, you can cut the pins that hold the brake shoes to the backing plate, pop the springs off the top large bolt/pin, loosen the brake adjuster, disconnect the E-Brake.. you can do it.

Re: 14 bolt Drum Seized

Does the drum spin? If so, there is something you didn't remove or back off. If it won't spin then the shoes are rusted to the drum or the adjuster is spun up too tight

if the adjuster is spun too tight, what is the proper procedure to loosen it (which way to turn it and best tool for it)??

if the shoes are adjusted to tight or the drums have a groves from worn shoes. The adjuster only goes 1 way unless you use push in on the lever arm to back out the adjuster .

If that does work than cut the heads off the shoe hold down pins. It will give you enough room to get the drum off.

Are the hold down pins on the outside of the backing plate?

Yes, on the outside of the backing plate. There about 3/16" in size kinda like a nail. You can also drill out the head .

Re: 14 bolt Drum Seized

Here is what the drum looks like when off looking @ the backing plate. The springs and cups are about 8 & 4 o clock.
