Lifting and hauling a disassembled bed
70 8ft fleetside bed. Sides have been removed from the floor. Back panel is still attached to the floor.
How heavy are the component parts? Can they be lifted into the back of my 72 longbed fleetside without a crane? I only need to haul them about 30 miles, and I can avoid highways the whole way if needed. So I'm not worried about strapping them down. However, I don't have many people around here to help me with heavy lifting.

Re: Lifting and hauling a disassembled bed
The bedsides are heavy but you can handle them. The bedfloor is another story. I could move it around in the shop but there was no way to load it by myself. Maybe use a chain hoist or cherry picker if you can't get some help.

Re: Lifting and hauling a disassembled bed
Holy crap, is the floor heavy! Took four of us to muscle the bed floor on top of the rails.
Secured the whole thing with ratchet straps and drove home on surface streets. Getting the bed floor off the truck will be not so fun. But that's for tomorrow.

Re: Lifting and hauling a disassembled bed
Use that cherry picker to pick the floor. Land it on saw horses and then use the picker to hold the sides while you assemble them to the floor and back panel...Then use the picker to lift the whole bed with either a stout oak 4x4 or a piece of channel iron long enough to span the width of the bed. Find the balance point just ahead of the stake pockets and clamp the 4x4 to the bed rails...Use your tie down straps in a two point Y-pick and a third strap to balance and level the bed off the heavy end..."Piece of cake"
