1-ton Longhorn vs 3/4-ton

There's a thread about 1-ton Longhorns (now I kind of wish mine was one, but I'll be ok), and it made me curious about what the difference is.

My 2500 GMC (think C30 Longhorn) uses, I think, 1-ton rails, has the Dana 60, same rear suspension. The only difference I can think of would be the front control arms and spindles.

If that's the only difference, I can't imagine why they bothered to make both variants, so I must be misunderstanding something.

Can someone learn me all about this? I've been working on one for three years, you'd think I'd know!

Springs and brakes were different. Correct on them both using 1 ton frames.

The offering of HD 3/4 and 1 tons that share the same frame isn't unusual. The 01 up 2500hd's use 1 ton frames and axles, yet they still offer a SRW 1 ton.

Thanks! Weird though. Seems odd to carry a completely different SKU (or whatever they call a model variant) just for springs and brakes and control arms.

I guess I'm more surprised they didn't just build all Longhorns that way, but they knew their business. To wit, in a '69 Impala if you had a 6-banger Biscayne you only got one upper control arm (on the rear obviously!).

My Longhorn C20 has an Eaton under the rear, could the Eaton vs Dana be another difference?

I think 2500 in GMC-speak is 3/4 ton. 3500 is 1 ton.

Wouldn't all C/30 and C3500 Longhorns have HO72 rears? I've only seen Dana 60s used as 3/4t rears.

Did they make a 67-72 Suburban 30?

Did they make a 67-72 coil spring version 30 with overloads?

On the 69 Impala 6-banger Biscayne, what side did they put that single upper control arm on or did they relocate it?

No and No. All 30 series had leaf spring rear. So, since all Longhorns are on C/30 frames they are all leaf spring

Did all C30s have dual rear wheels? If so is that the rear end difference? HO52 is SRW and HO72 DRW?

No, there were single rear wheel C30's. For example, take the Longhorn, in 67-72 you couldn't have a DRW with a bed, so if there was a one-ton Longhorn, then you definitely had a SRW C30.

It has been discussed before but I cant point to a thread. At least, the brakes are different between the HO72 and HO52. I think thats it for differences but can't confirm.

I thought there was a support bolt or something that all HO72's had in the carrier that only a few HO52's had?
