Does the Output Yoke slide out? Muncie 4spd

In order to remove the drive shaft from a Muncie 4 speed transmission can you just slide the drive shaft out towards the rear of the '74 truck?

I had to unbolt the pinion yoke/flange straps on mine

my terminology may be all way off, so here is a pic of what I am talking about

That style yoke is bolted on. Look in the middle of the ears and remove the attaching bolt to remove the yoke. Buddy

Ya, Greg, there's a big bastard nut on the end of the transmission output shaft that holds the yoke on. Unlike turbo 350/400 (and many others) which have the driveshaft yoke as a slip (splined) joint, the sm465 puts the slip joint in the shaft itself.

The way you took it apart is completely correct (taking the straps off the ujoint).

Re: Does the Output Yoke slide out? Muncie 4spd

thanks I thought the shaft ought to travel in and out a bit as the rear suspension gives or especially when you lower the truck, is it because we have a two piece drive shaft that it doesn't have to go in and out of the tranny

by the way I only wanted to take it out / remove it if indeed it was supposed to slide out, in that case I wanted to ensure it glides in and out as it is supposed to, no need to take it out now that I know it is a fixed design

thank you very much again

There should be a slip yoke in the driveshaft

An original SM465 should have a 2 piece driveshaft. A slip joint is between the axle and the carrier bearing and a short shaft between the carrier bearing and the tranny.
