Need to make my new ride with a cheap paint job look like patina!

I bought a 72 suburban for the wife today and it came with a pretty decent paint job that was put on over the original dings and scuffs. It isn't good enough to buff out due to the pitting on some of the surfaces before paint was applied.

The wife wants it to look dull and maybe some weathered look. Can anyone give me some ideas or techniques to use that will make this burb look weathered and sun faded?

I think the paint is single stage with no clear on it and seems to be semi think. I have no idea what is underneath. The po stated it was sanded with 400 grit over the stock red/orangish paint then sprayed with the medium blue paint it currently has.

Any help or guidance as always is appreciated.

park it in the field for a few years.

You could try Friday night poker games on the hood. 4 guys leaning on the front fenders every week should accelerate the process.

(...I hope you know, I'm just jerkin' your chain)

Good luck :-)

I would probably just try a little D.A. sanding on the roof with about 220 grit. Go really fast and don't stay in one area long. Try about 3 sq. ft. and wipe it all down with water to get the cruddy off and see how it looks. If it looks bad quit. Most wife's never look at the roof anyways. if it looks ok, spray a little rattle can clear from O'Reillys on it. you can get matte clear too if u like.

Let me paint it, I know it'll look old, dull and worn.

If you want patina get out a buffer and spend your time working through to the primer. Don't sand it because it will look like you just sanded it in hopes to be a cool kid or something.

Find the Trucks! Project "Classix." Just type that in google. They show you a pretty cheap and easy way to get a fauxtina paint. Get ready for some backlash though, there's some people here that may blow up your thread about how fake and dumb it looks to them.

I am just wanting to dull it down a bit and not really sand through. This truck was red and orange originally and I don't think that would look good with the light blue paint on there.

I thought I saw someone on here that had a chemical they used to make a rust look that didn't really clean the paint off. That might be an option as well.

Definitely not looking for that fake sanded look!
