Mystery sound..........help!

So I have had this rubbing sound since I bought my truck. It sounds just like he metal to metal rub when brake pads are shot only not as loud. I have done all the brakes so I know that isn't it. Tranny and both diffs have been serviced, dirty fluid but nothing to be concerned about. All the u-joints are tight as well as the carrier bearing. The sound changes with speed as far as pitch but doesn't really get louder or quieter. Doesn't change with braking, acceleration or cornering. Defiantly seems to be coming from the rear somewhere. Up next is the transfer case service. All the wheel bearings seemed good when I did brakes. Do I replace u-joints and carrier bearing just to be sure? What do you all think?

Re: Mystery sound..........help!

If the pinion bearings in the differential are real bad it could be making the noise you hear.

Get someone to put the truck up on a hoist to listen to it with it running in gear.

Did you give the model, year, engine, fuel system type, and transmission information?
If it is modified from what came stock from the factory, let us know that too.

That thought had crossed my mind but of course I didn't think about it when we had it on the lift doing brakes I'll check it out.
