dash rattle please help

I know this is a long shot, but my truck has recently developed a rattle noise at certain speed while driving in the dash area. Its driving me crazy. My truck was almost completely rattle and squeak free when I got it....I think my damn exhaust is rattling this truck apart slowly. It's friggin loud (flowmaster 2 chambers dumped)

Anyways.....it sounds like loose pocket change rattling in the ashtray, I did in fact have loose change in the ashtray so I was hoping it was that but nope.

I can't seem to see anything causing it.

Anyone else have a rattle they've tracked down and fixed?

Maybe it will give me some ideas of things to check.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

And I know these trucks are old and make noise.....I get it....I like it, but If I can fix an annoying rattle I will....

Thanks,

Re: dash rattle please help

I HATE dash rattles!

One thing I've done in the past is to have someone drive the truck and I sit in the passenger seat with an automotive stethoscope and look for the rattle.

I've had good success with this method.

I have found that in these trucks, sometimes the retractable end of the seatbelt will get cocked sideways and will rattle on the bottom part of the door. Kind of sounds like what you've described...also on my K20, the window crank mechanism has some wear (they are original) and they will rattle sometimes. Moving the crank a little usually shuts it up....

Hope you find it!

Re: dash rattle please help

I had dash rattles in the last 2 trucks I bought and it turned out to be change the previous owners left in the ashtray. The first one had 14.00 in change and the second one about 8.00 although this sounds like you probably have a different problem.

Talking Re: dash rattle please help

not related to a dash rattle, but thought I'd post anyway's...I read somewhere that these trucks had a problem with a "Tuning Fork" hum kinda sound, from what I read, it was the hood hinge springs vibrating while under tension from the hood being down. Solution was to place some foam rubber tubing insulation inside the coils of the springs, hopefully, this will help someone with a similar issue.
I would try and look at the various braces/brackets behind the instrument cluster, or the radio/speaker bracket as well, hopefully, you will eliminate it by process of elimination....HTH,
Ben

I developed a rattle in mine, and about a mile down the road the speedo quit. You might try lubing it and the cable.

Re: dash rattle please help

Thanks guys for all your help!

I figured out what was causing the rattle....it was the chrome ring thing that's behind the right knob of the radio. It just spins round and round and I can't get it to stop or tighten. Not sure if it's supposed to be that way. I will take the knob off and see if I can secure it...if not I'll just fold a tiny piece of paper or something and cram it between the ring and where it meets the metal dash. This was causing the noise. Every time the noise started, I reached over and held the ring in my hand and it stops....let it go and the noise instantly came back!

Whewww......that was driving me crazy!

Re: dash rattle please help

Glad you found it!

Maybe a very small piece of double sided tape would stop it from moving....
