1970 C/60 Parts help!!
I am looking for parts for my fire department's brush unit. It is a 1970 C/60 with 4 Wheel drive and a 366 engine. The problem is the steering knuckles have begun to leak, and I am having no luck finding the seals. It is a Napco front axle with a Rockwell transfer case. There is no ID tag on the axle and the only numbers I can find are: one that is cast into the axle and it looks to be a part number; and the other looks like a mfg date/serial number?? I have a parts diagram that I am pretty sure is for it, even though it says it's from a Ford
Any help in where to look is greatly appreciated. Attachment 1365878 |

If no one can help you here, there is a guy over at Stovebolt.com who is real good with hard to find parts. Just post it in the Big Bolt forum.

I have seen on other forums where you can put a large zerk fitting on one of the kingpin cap bolts and pump those knuckles full of john deere cornhead grease

Nice truck, ATS!!! Only things I can add to the conversation is that NAPCO normally used Eaton style axles in its conversions. From what I see this is one too. With what the specs should be on your truck, I would think hatthey used a H072 style axle on it. Now with that said, Eaton wouldnt have anything on this as they would have supplied the raw parts and NAPCO would have done the rest. Three other places I would check out for additional answers would be napco4x4.com and steelsoldiers.com and Memphis equipment. on the outside chance that the M35 boots would work.

Had one of those apart years ago. I seem to remember the axle shaft grease seal, which is inboard of the U-joint, is the problem. The knuckle has a felt wiper under the ring that encloses the knuckle to the 'ball' on the end of the axle housing. That felt ring is not designed to hold back oil, it is there to keep dirt/water out of the enclosed U-joint. If you get it all apart, there is a chance the seal is an off-the-shelf part (hopefully it has a number on it). Of course, you run the risk of getting it apart and not having parts to put it back together.

Everyone, thanks for pointing me in positive directions. I have posted in the other forums you guys recommended also. It's looking like we might have to take it apart and hope for part numbers.

Majority of these enclosed knuckle 4wd axles have an inner axle seal that keeps oil out of the knuckle as previously stated. Then the knuckle is packed with grease with a rubber and felt wiper. The felt wiper keeps dirt and debris off the rubber wiper. You can make the wipers yourself. The problem you have is in your inner axle seal.
