Fuel fill through rear fender well?

I had a good friend when I was younger with a 1966 C20 (R.I.P). He had an extra fuel tank on the truck that was located on the driver's side between bed and frame rail under the bed. The fill was in the fender well in front of the tire so it couldn't be seen unless you knew where to look. He would put a cover (an opened tin can) over the the gas cap to keep dirt out of the lock. It worked great!! Does anyone make a kit or tank for this for our trucks?

I was thinking about strapping a tank from a 73-87 in there....Think it'd work?

I have a filler in my well. Would have to show you how I did it. All depends on what you are doing with the truck.

I want the extra fuel capacity with a stock appearance. Which tank did you use and where do you have it mounted please?

I have the suburban tank mounted under the frame at the rear. It is the poly type. If I did it again, I would have used metal.

I found measurements for the 73-75 (may fit other years) side tank. 14x56x11 is what it lists as....I will measure when I get home and see if it'll fit in there.

You are talking about the very common accessory/aftermarket saddle tanks added to most (it seems) C20-30s. Even the factory NL2 aux tank was pretty much the same. An often seen variation was the fender well fill (vs cut doors). Demco is one brand that comes to mind as using that style filler. The soup cans worked well at keeping grit off the filler but that area would pack with snow/ice on occasion.

Finding a tank or a pair used shouldn't be a problem. Either usable or as patterns. Tom probably has a set or two there in Mesa.

The other alternative is to install the NL2 tank installation on your truck as it would easily backfit. But the through the bed filler (Blazer style) is off-putting to some.

The 73 up tanks are designed to use a frame mounted cradle bracket and extend under the cab floor that is raised to allow the tank to nest. To me its not worth the effort given all the bolt ins around.
