Toggle Switch on 72?

I found this toggle switch that looks like it runs into the dash... Anyone know what it may go to? And also has anyone ever seen this kind of AC on one?

You'll have to run the wires on the switch, that is an aftermarket AC system. I had one with that huge compressor in AZ.

Is there anything speacial about that AC that I need to know?

With no belt on it, probably hasnt worked in a while. I would have it removed.

That's a York compressor (used on Fords a lot). They were installed by the dealer or afterwards. I just removed a knee knocker system from my truck because it wasn't blowing cold anymore and it's hard to find R12. Didn't want expensive R12 leaking out while I'm trying to find a leak.

The switch could be anything. 40 year old truck and multiple owners... who knows. My first guess would be a kill switch to deter theft.

Had that compressor in a '69 GMC I used to own. Huge boat anchor that did not work and was attached to a "knee knocker" AC system. Forced to throw that compressor and brackets in the trash when I blew my fuel pump on the highway. Had to remove the compressor just to gain access to the pump.

So if I was to take it out what kind of AC unit would be good to put on it?

There is nothing wrong with the old add on systems. They just have less features than the stock factory installed A/C. Blend air and defrost capability come to mind. The compressors can be rebuilt and the are several aftermarket companies reproducting the add on unit for Ford Mustangs and the like.

Any A/C system can be first vacuum leak checked before adding R12 or other refrigerant as adapted.

Might be worth having a local old timer shop look into it before trashing and starting over with say a vintage air unit.

Just be aware some have strange belt routing. On my 80 Dodge D200 they moved the alternator, drove the compressor off the original alternator pulley track and drove the alternator off the compressor alone.

That old York type compressor went on every kind of thing that had wheels for a long time Fords had them and some Dodges too, I think as well as some John Deere's before they went to the GM Delco type A-6 on their tractors. [I remember dad taking a knife and cutting the A/C belt on a truck that some workers were sitting in eating lunch got the truck hot it wasn't two months old. A week or two later we had a combine down in the field and the tech wanted to go to town to get a compressor dad said get it off that truck right there]
Anyway the thing I was starting this thread about is some stuff called Freeze 12. A little while after the freon went stupid crazy this stuff came onto the market as a option to replace the freon with this stuff for a lot less money. Last time I bought some it was like $2.99 per can. It comes in the same type of can that the freon does so all of the taps and gauges work with it and it cools just as well and I have never had any durability problems with it. Jim
