x pipe vs no x pipe sound clips inside

So when I was looking for it I couldn't find it. So I made it. Here are the links to two you tube videos of my truck with and with out an x pipe. My set up is a 355 full tube flow tech headers. 2.5 in. Exhaust 40 series Flowmaster. The exhaust is all the same except I put in a flow tech x pipe kit and the x lands right under my Trans tailshaft. So now there is an apples to apples sbc x pipe vs divorced pipes sound clips. Truck is an 86 retrofit to 74 355/t56 4.11eaton posi. With a 6/8 static drop. Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Adding the x pipe smoothed out the exhaust note, especially under throttle. If I were sitting in my house and heard your x pipe truck drive by, I would think it were a late model muscle car, like perhaps a 00-ish Camaro. The before clip is straight up vintage muscle car rattling through two chambers (that's what the 40 series used to be called, at least around my high school).

Cool stuff.

Not to jack the thread, but what do you have for cam, heads, and compression? Also, how did you modify the T56 to get the shifter moved forward?

It's a .30 over police interceptor motor out of a 71. Not sure about can but heads are stock 882 heads. I put bucket seats in
5 he shifter actually lands almost perfectly in the cab

Is there a certain place to mount X pipe . Before ex. or after or ?

Technically you should start with a cold exhaust. Draw a line from the header to the back with a wax pen. Start your truck. The wax will melt off in one spot first. That is where your exhaust pulses build up and where a crossover will do the most good. Otherwise the closer to the front the better. Usually under the tail shaft or shortly before.

I was told the crossover would mellow it out and it does but it doesn't take away all my lump. The video of the x is muffled because my phone was sitting in the grass. Once it's nicer I'll do it over. What I really like is that it does sound more late model upon acceleration. The Rapp and Crack is a great sound for a mud truck or even a hot rod heck even muscle car but to me it's a little more old school of a sound. I love it and it has its place but to me this build isn't it. It's a slammed truck more stream lined and a little off the beaten path around here. And I wanted a sound to match

I prefer the x-pipe over the divorced but I also do not like the sound of 40s and think they are obnoxious.

I run straight pipes with no crossover myself. I think it sounds better on our older engines personally and it also makes diagnosing/observing the individual cylinder banks easier. I run Hooker long tube headers as well and I love the crackle!

I've got dual 2.25 flowmaster 40s with H on a stock 305-2B.
Love it.sure dosnt sound stock.
The other is 2.25 cherry bombs ,
Not any quieter lol.
Both trucks have short pipes.

I like the h-pipe sound under throttle but dig the idle on the divorced pipes. I got an LS conversion in my set up and I think after hearing this I will go h-pipe. Thanks of sharing.

Seperate pipes all the way! Might gain a few ponies with an x pipe but the seperate pipes sound old school nasty. X pipe sounds like a newer fuel injection motor.

Hey Superwade,

I'm a bench seat guy and will always be a bench seat guy. Would the stiock location T56 shifter work with a bench? Finding a used T56 for a decent price wouldn't be so bad if the mid mount shifter kit weren't so dang expensive. Btw, what did you use for clutch pedals? The 85-87 hydro stuff?

Def not work with a bench seat unless you put a pretty deep notch In it, which I was going to do but came across some nice 91 blazer buckets cheap. Regarding clutch pedals, I used a gas motor hyd. Set up from an 87. It was nice for me cause in 84 I believe they started putting center punch dimples in the firewalls. So there wasn't really even any guess work. I used the factory truck master cylinder and a slave from a 91? Camaro since it has a bleeder screw in it. A.couple adapter fittings and poof it was done.

How do you guys think separate pipes on an efi 5.3 would sound? My swap starts soon once it stops being colder than Alaska lol just curious.
