key cylinder replacement questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have purchased new door locks, and a new ignition cylinder,
from a fellow board member, (thanks Bill ), and am asking for any tips about replacing them, I know there is a deal with a paper clip, for the ignition, but can't remember how it goes, and I don't recall anyhting on the doors, any help is greatly appreciated..John

For the ignition:

Put your key in the ignition, the stick a paperclip wire in the hole on the left side of the key hold. Press down on the paperclip and turn the key to the left and pull out all at the same time and it should come right out

for the doors remove the door panels and roll up the window. reach in to the door and behind the lock there is c clip that you need to pull out once you remove the clip you need to unhook the linkage and the lock will come out

Yellow forgot to mention the cussing and throwing fits to get that ignition switch out. Jewels will tell you all about that.

(sorry Jewels...I had to)
Sometimes they can be a real pain in the 12 bolt. If the key comes out of the switch while you are doing this, something that will hook in the key slot will be needed so you can pull on it.
Some times they just pop out when you do it, other times they really test your paitents.

The last one i did came out in 5 seconds.....but they all arent like that

I need to get a new one for my truck too...you can start it with a screwdriver and pull out the key in the "ON" position, lol

That is the ultra rare keyless ignition option.
I think the option code is STEAL-MY-72.

In a 68-72 you put the key in the acc postion then put the paper clip in... 67 put paper clip in with key in off position.

I will wait to tackle the doors wednesday, on my day off..

Rod, not all 68 trucks had the acc position. I know first hand on Jewels's truck, and another 68 I was looking at last night too. (It's a canadian built truck if it matters)
