70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

Glad to find this site. Restoring a 70 CustomCamper/20.

I know a lot of people may say why a c20 long bed, not the most desirable truck, but Dad purchased this truck in November of 69, and I am now the 4th Owner. Purchased Last Month.

After DAD, it spent most of its life as a farm truck. Little rust, but fixable. Tailgate trash.

350 - tired 200K + miles, 4 speed with granny, 410 rears. Wood floor in bed, and 5 light cab. Did have 2 (after market) tanks under bed, now gone.

Just pulled the engine, and will be starting the body work in a couple weeks. Will take the engine back to stock + a little. Will make it a two tone truck. I want to make this truck my everyday driver.. Add factory AC. (necessary for southerm Miss). Was thinking about putting a Gear Venders Overdrive on it for highway use. Plan on using the same rims with a lower profile tire.

Will have other questions in the future, I am sure. Will post progress. Want to have it done for Cruisin The Coast.

Thanks Dan

Hey! There is nothing wrong with a 3/4 ton, many people prefer them. Great looking truck.

Cool 3/4ton and you can't beat the family history. You may look into the nv4500 swap which is a 5 speed. You'll get your overdrive that way. What color two tone are you planning on? Good luck with the resto!

68350:

Green and white, or light blue and white - not sure.

A nv4500 swap I will look into. As I understand, I cannot put a higher gear in this rear end. Is there anyplace to get a speed to RPM chart with 350/410's/nv4500 setup. Besides, may be less $ than a GV setup.

Thanks for advice. Dan

68350

Just found the spec's on the nv4500, looks good.

.73 in 5th would do close to same as GV for highway

Thanks

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

Either color sounds great to me, both are very good looking on these trucks. Do you have a dana 60 rear end? Or an Eaton?

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

Not sure if a Dana or Eaton. Not at site of truck now, but will be working on it on Thur and check out. Know the truck was made in Canada - if that makes a diff. Dan

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

Not sure if it makes a difference. Snap a picture of it. Easiest way to tell difference is Dana has a bolt on differential cover on the back of the axle and Eaton has a drop out center section that bolts to axle on front of axle. If you have a Dana 60 there's endless gear ratio options. Both of my big block automatic 3/4t's have 3.54 gears

Nice truck, welcome to the Custom Camper club!
My 2 cents of advice is stick with the stock tire size for your truck (265/75/16)
Going to a smaller size tire on a 3/4 ton longbed just doesn't look right.

what sicklajoie said - don't go smaller or you might have salami slice lookin tires. LOVE your truck, by the way. A 70 C20 Custom Camper with marker lights that was your DAD'S! Awesome.

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

Sicklajoie - Nice truck yourself. Like the bed cover, was thinking about one myself.

Sicklajoie & Jocka - Will reconsider the tire selection.

Always knew where the truck was, it was just getting the last owner to sell it to me. He got another truck for farm use, and was then mine. Was an Indiana truck all its life, and has been to Alaska twice.

I hope I do it justice - Dan

Nice truck, or will be,Nothing wrong with longbeds, I love 3/4 tonsI have several, not all 67-72,some are square bodies...but all are pre 1980 and the only ones on the road are pre 1975 so no smog required....cool that your truck was your dads!

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

If it ain't a full floating long bed... it ain't a truck.
Keep the SM465 and the 4.10s and you can run a stock 350 for dirt cheep. With the 4.10s you can adjust with tire height for lower or taller. Plus you can blowup and replace a couple stock 350s for the price and hassle of a Gear Vendor. I think Chevy put the ultimate combo in the truck already. The truck transmission with the Eaton HO52 with 4.10 and the small block 350. What more can you ask for? Oh I know..... White.... Keep it white, with black trim interior. But I'm biased!

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

B-4 on hold right now, frame mostly done. Truck is a road tractor with 265 twin carbs, and also has Air over Hyd brakes, Vacumm 2 speed axle, both Air and vacuum trailer brakes. Air brakes done, 2 speed axle shifts, vacuum brakes set up.

I do not do body work, or lets say damn poor, and had a guy working on the cab. Went to jail for drugs. was able to retrive parts, and Cab in storage awaiting plan B. Still working on it, but not priority. Lowboy was purchased new with the truck, for in early 50's Dodge sold Freuhauf.

Re: 70 Custom Camper/20 (Newbee)

That old dodge will be a cool little semi tractor. And has the way cool lighthouse cab. Fun stuff.

But get that chevy running because they are way fun to drive.... especially the old 4 speeds!

Keep on truckin'!

nothing wrong with 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. If we all had shot beds life would be boring.
