Confirm
Can someone confirm for me that a 69-70 Chevy truck when you turn the headlights on the parking lights go out. Was this factory. I had a 67 that didn't do this and I know my 71 doesn't.

Re: Confirm
I'm almost certain the parking lights on my 69 stay on, but I can't confirm as I'm a long way from the truck. I think that was one of the safety features added in the late 60s along with side marker reflectors/lights. The change was made in case a headlight was out. It would stand to reason the 67s may not have the feature.

Re: Confirm
I'm just wondering. I not 100% sure the 67 didn't stay on but I never noticed them not being on back when I had it. This doesn't make since to me as to why they would have them go off.
Anybody have a clue as to why they do this?

Re: Confirm
I believe that's how it was in 67 but most people fixed that issue and I think somewhere in between 66-68 there was a law passed saying that parking lights will be required to stay on so now they are called running lights. But i was born in 85 so I might be full of nonsense

Re: Confirm
I have the "classic update" wiring harness for 67/68 trucks from AAW (not installed yet), I wonder if the park lights will stay on with that wiring harness.

Re: Confirm
You can put a jumper in the headlight switch harness to make them stay on with the headlights too

Re: Confirm
The '67 GMC 3/4 ton I used to own was such that when the headlights came on, the front parking lights went out.

Re: Confirm
This was the norm with most vehicles before 68 safety standards came into effect, Even my 1942 dump truck does the same thing, parking lights off when headlights on. I think Andy may have a problem with his head light switch or some front end wiring harness issues.

Re: Confirm
Nothing wrong just had some one on FB ask if this was correct and I was wondering after so many answered it was normal.

I'd like them to stay on I think it looks cooler so maybe I'll do like 67swb72klb suggested and put a jumper in there.

Re: Confirm
I don't recall any GM cars prior to about 1968 that kept the parking lights lit with the headlights on. After that it's the norm.

Re: Confirm
It's not a '67-only thing and not a GM-only thing. Although some safety regs had crept in already (seat belts), '68 was the beginning of the safety era. There may have been some fancy cars that left the parking lights on prior to '68, but it was mandated in '68, right along with side markers, padded dash/steering wheel hub, headrests (on cars), spinner hubcaps banned, and more. Even dash knobs were affected. Many regs were allowed to phase-in by a later year, like safety bumpers in '73 and side markers to be lighted. It wasn't till sometime in the '70s that Maryland required safety inspection for trucks...period.
