engine number

So i have this 350 motor. I want to find out what year it is from. Where would I look on block to find some numbers? I believe it is out of a late 70's, but not sure.

Re: engine number

Casting numbers are located at the back of the block on top, behind the drivers side valve cover. There's also a pad in front of the passengers side valve cover with some numbers stamped which also give you info on the engine.

Re: engine number

Also, the Date Casting numbers are located at the back of the block on top, but behind the passenger side valve cover. typically a letter, then 1 or 2 numbers, then a space then 1 more number.
It is best to get all 3 numbers mentioned.
Block Casting Number - Rear Driver Side
Date Casting Number - Rear Passenger Side
Stamp Number - Front Passenger Side Cyl Head Mount Surface, just above water pump mount.

Re: engine number

The alternator pad number may not be accurate either. The really is no definitive way of knowing what you have.

Re: engine number

Here are pictures of the locations on small blocks from my original 350.

First is the casting number behind left head. Second is the casting date (in this case, November 27, 1968) behind the right head. The last is the engine assembly and application info stamped in front of the right head. The assembly date is November, 30 (it should have been "V1130XD" not "VI130XD", but the person who set up the stamp apparently grabbed an I instead of a 1).
