CaptainFab Impala rear disc conversion: measurements needed

I am considering going to the Captainfab Impala rear disc brake conversion since everything I have read has been positive. Why I'm considering this conversion is I'm having issues clearing the brake drums while changing a tire. I currently have to pull on my wheel arches to get enough space to shove them in. This won't work once I replace the wheel arches. If you want to see what I'm dealing with click the link to my build thread in the signature and on the current last page you'll see.

Captainfab told me the diameter of Impala rotor is 11.6" where my drums are 13" so I think just that alone would probably solve my issue.

I'm running a rear axle out of an 84 c10 that is a 10bolt. I can't remember from doing the axle swap if the axle was 1.5" wider total that my factory 63 axle or if it was 1.5" wider each side.

Either way, does anyone have an 80's c10 10bolt rear axle with Captainfab disc conversion that could get me a measurement of their total axle length as well as length from outside edge of the rotor to the outside edge of the other side.

What I'm looking for is to see if the disc conversion will be a significant difference in width compared to the drum set up. I'm quickly running out of build $ and would hate to throw a bunch of $ at this to not get the results I'm looking for.

Thanks!
Jake

To get the wheel off easier for the time being. Just put a jack stand under the rear frame and drop the axle down a bit farther. It is a pain but for now it will be better then pulling on your bedsides. Or you can put the jack stand under the rear diff and jack up on the frame a bit.

My Paneltruck lays completely flat on the ground. I used an offroad jack yesterday and was able to get the back bumper up almost 2' in order to get the wheels off. I also have to unbolt the bags and the shocks for the axle to be able to swing down far enough. I'm running 15x7 rear rims with 215/75/15 tires.

Same thing here. Mine lays frame and rocker. Undo bags and shocks to get the wheels off. I think a disc set-up would clear enough to get the wheels off.

Are you running big wheels? I don't see how these big wheel guys are getting away with it other than removing the bed which in my case isn't possible. I understand my wheel size is the same as a 20 with a low profile etc, but I don't get how these guys get the clearance

The inside diameter of the wheel is larger....The same thing that you are trying to accomplish with the smaller diameter of the disc rotor.
One thing that you need to consider is that the rotor is smaller than your current brake drum, but the caliper may still interfere...Just sayin.

That's a very good point I had not really considered. Guess I was too focused on one part and not looking at the big picture.

Re: CaptainFab Impala rear disc conversion: measurements needed

Part of what is contributing to your tire and wheel removal issue is the increased width of the 10 bolt differential of .750" per side over a '63 to early '70 12 bolt. It is true that the caliper will add to the overall diameter, but the caliper is located at aprox the 10 O'clock position.

Thanks for the info. I'm still thinking your brackets and conversion would help but I was hoping someone could provide some dimensions.

Does anyone have a total diameter with caliper on?
