3 ontt shifting into reverse

I am a relatively new owner of a 1970 c10 with a 402 BB and a three on the tree. When shifting into reverse I need to shift into first and then to reverse in order to avoid grinding gears. Without doing it the shift to reverse is harsh but when I do it shifts fine. Is this normal for this transmission or is it something I should look into?

Sounds like drag on the Input shaft. Is the clutch disengaging all the way?

Clutch is depressed all the way but that something to check before getting the truck back on the road in the spring.

Re: 3 ontt shifting into reverse

Try adjusting the shifter and making sure it is aligned. I had a 69 with a 3 speed and after doing this is shifted better.

I did do these adjustments when I bought the truck and they definitely got rid of a lot of the slop in the steering but did not change anything with reverse.

Re: 3 ontt shifting into reverse

I had a three speed on the column in the past and it had the same issue. Turned out the businhigs for the linkage in the column were worn out. I just changed it to a hurst floor shifter but I think you could pull the column out, tear it apart and rebuild it. My grinding was like it was trying to go into reverse and 2nd at the same time. Just a thought.
