C notching the frame?

I've searched the forum looking for how low you can go without C-notching the frame and only came up with newer vehicles. There are some great reenforcement threads on how to beef it up. So looks as if you can 4 or so inches and still have 4 or 5 inches of travel. What have you guys done?

Re: C notching the frame?

IMO, the most you can take out of the frame without changing the top rail is 3 inches. That's what I did and boxed about 6" on either side of notch. Have about 3 1/2 inches of travel and you can see how mine sits. I did raise the bed 2 inches and could have modified the top frame rail to take advantage of that but didn't. I think BAM did. You might look at his build sheet.

Re: C notching the frame?

How much did you lower it tho? I'm looking to lower mine 4" and want to if most or none are C notching at that distance. Sorry if my question was unclear. Mine is a 53'.

Re: C notching the frame?

Mine sits rather high because it has 255-60 15 tires but you can see where the center of the axle sits and I have between 2-1/2 and maybe 3 inches of clearance between the axle and the frame.

This is a stock 48 sitting at stock height for comparison.

I'd say my truck is probably lowered 4 inches in back but without a notch the axle hits the frame way too often.
