So I bought a truck a couple years ago, and it had almost new BFG AT load range E's on it. I took them off since they are 285's and a tad to big for towing heavy with just a smallblock. Now that I've got the tires off the rim I see there are small patches on the insides of the sidewalls. Looking close, there is a 1/2" slice on the outside of each that was glued/sealed shut when the patch was placed.

So, would you worry about them? My brother worked in a shop doing tire repair when he was younger and he thought they would be fine on any truck that wasn't hauling heavy. I could run these on a occasional use truck but if there is any chance of a blowout I won't. I don't care if they would leak, but o only care if they would fail catastrophically. Being a heavier truck tire, it doesn't seem like they would under lightly loaded conditions. Thoughts?

I think the fact that you're asking answers your own question. Maybe as a spare to get you home, but that's about it. Replace them for regular use.

I call sidewall patches "time bombs" It's always easy to tell someone to just buy a new one when it's not your money! But I highly recommend a new tire. The damage it could do to your truck or someone else if you have a blow out on the hi way will far surpass the cost of a new tire.

If you're only going at slow speeds for short distances, I might chance it, but I wouldn't risk it for anything more than that.

The question that you need to ask is would you let your son or daughter drive the truck with those tires and not worry? You can think about that on the way to the tire store. I know I always have people ask me about the trucks I rebuild about checking this or that and I tell them I drive everything a good while before I sell it. I also buy things at the sale that I would want to drive. I know that limits my market but I buy every thing like it is gonna be mine forever cause you never know when it might be. It is the same about the safety of them I build every one like my girl or my son my drive it cause they might. Jim

This might[most likely would] be a different issue if it were in the tread instead of the side wall. Jim

Run 'em only if you're putting around farm fields at very low speeds. For any other use, replace 'em.

I am no authority, but I can speak from a sort of experience.
My last two punctures were in the tread but because they fell within 1" of the sidewall Costco wouldn't repair/patch them. The first time it happened I thought that Costco was trying to force me into new tires so I took the problem to a local chain tireshop, and they wouldn't do it either.
Another time the flat was from clipping a curb with the sidewall and it wouldn't hold air, and then I was told flat out that the tire was a loss.
The explanation I got is that the sidewall isn't constructed to be remedied by a patch. And like the posters above, a failure in the sidewall can be nasty.

I was in the tire biz for twenty years and you didn't repair sidewalls in passenger tires!. In larger truck tires you can do whats called a "sidewall section repair" but its not recommended. Sometimes people who have had their tires slashed by a person with a knife would bring them in for repair and we would send them out to the retread plant to do sections, but there would be no warranty given on the repairs. As stated ok or a bush buggy.

I blew a 285 out one night at 2am in the mountains near Clear Lake in Cali. My buddy had to reach over and help me hold my steering wheel to keep the truck from going over the mountain.(Ozzy reference) Every time it came back around it was hitting tie rod center link and would jolt toward the roadside which was a nice steep cliff sort of drop-off. This was the second one actually. The first one was on the San Mateo bridge and almost flew off that one. So NO! I wouldn't run em. In fact they should be destroyed so No one else can run them. Roll your truck around on them but once it's running do not be tempted to destroy all your hard work with a simple run around the block.

Get new tires , sidewalls are not supposed to be patched , maybe with a small puncture you could get around that rule "I would not" ,but with a slice ,, no way ,, get rid of them .

Wow,i didnt think there would be unanimous agreement to keep them off the road . I will use on my offroad farm truck, since they have great tread and are $300 each.

So now Im curious why a shop repaired them in the first place . Maybe because they are E rated truck tires? I can post a pphoto but it sounds like it not about the amount of damage, just that there is damege deep enough to possibly hit a cord.

When I get a tire like that I mark them bad with a paint stick and use them for rollers.

I was thinking about spray painting them to make it obvious unlike when i bought the truck and drove it home for hundreds of miles on these tires. Practically invisible from outside.

If you jack the tire up and spin it while you spray paint it, you might actually get something halfway decent!

The repair may not have been done by a tire shop.... some guys have mounting equipment at home.

Well this may be a little different from some but when I go my wife of many years goes 2.
I think to much of her to risk it. She can not be replaced , tires are cheap, I would buy new ones.

Hi, I work for. discount tire for 33 years I wouldn't want the tires on my truck. The side wall Flexes to much. not safe at all.
