tilt column
What year of van is the best donor for a tilt column if I want to keep the ignition switch on the dash?

1971-1977 Vans have the proper column.

Vans up thrpugh 81 will have the tilts. I have seen them on up to 83 but not sure if they were original. Also, don't forget the motorhomes, they were in some up to 88.

The older ones will have the U shaped plug, but they will have the real big shifter arm.
If you ever see one with a good pointer, grab the pointer if you need it or not. Pretty hard to find and if not mistaken, not in production anymore. |

From in the cab, they look 99.9% truck tilt. Under the hood, it still takes a good eye.
For instalation, the neutral safety switch needs to be moved down about 6 to 8 inches further or just deleted, a plug harness adapter may or may not be needed depending on year of column. Under the hood you need to remove the intermediate shaft and colapse it a little and then it'll all bolt right in. |

tilt pointer
Longhornmail, If I'm not mistaken aren't the pointers readily available aftermarket for $6-10?

I bought a couple of them from Tim Christian recently so I think they are still available.

Is there somewhere online I can get a wiring diagram of the van tilt and our columns, since I am going to be doing the conversion shortly.
I was able to take it out of the van at the wrecking yard so I cut the wires above the plug ( I have both sides) that way I can just move wires into the proper place.

If you look at the wires you will find that the color coding of the Vans match the trucks. The only difference is the indicator light wire which is gray on the Vans and the truck you are installing the tilt on has a fiber optics for the indicator.
The minor issue is moving the neutral safety switch as the Vans are in a bad location. Adapters are available for the Van plug to the truck. Jim |

Did any van tilts come without the column shifter?. My truck has a B&M shifter on the floor now.

That is what I want as well. I am taking the 3 speed column shift and relocating it to the floor. So I want a tilt, but one without an auto shift
