timing adjustment

I'm going to adjust my timing. I've watched a few videos and there is a marker by the fan pulley. in the videos I've seen there is a red arrow that tells you top dead center. mine doesn't have that arrow. am i missing it or is mine different? heres what mine looks like it goes 16 12 8 4 0 4 and top says before bottom says after.

Re: timing adjustment

That cut in the balancer just below that timing tab is what tells you your timing. You match that cut to a mark on the timing tab to time your vehicle.

Depending on a lot of variables that cut should be around 8-12* BEFORE when the truck is running and idling when warmed up.

Re: timing adjustment

If you line the balancer notch (in the green circle) with 0 on the timing tab bolted to the timing cover, number one cylinder should be on top-dead-center(TDC). That is if all is right. The marks on the tab on the "before" side are degrees advanced and the numbers on the "after" side are retarded. Use a marker to make the notch on the balancer more visible. This will help you "see it" easier. Bruce

Re: timing adjustment

Don't forget, when checking/setting the timing disconnect the vacuum advance hose and plug the vacuum line to it.

Fawk did both of those last night. Clipped the front of the timing light then clipped the front of my finger.

Another suggestion is to put some paint or nail polish on the line on the balancer to make it more visible.
