Charcoal Canister Lines

I have searched, looked at pictures online and in the FSM and cannot find a definitive answer.

The engine in my 72 Super is a little Frankensteined. It has a 69 engine with 75 carb. The charcoal canister was not hooked up so I wanted to get it hooked up.

One line goes to fuel tank (return?), the other line goes to the PCV valve line and the other line goes to the vacuum port on the carb. Is that correct?

I have included pictures. I am most concerned that I do not have it hooked to the right line on the carb.

Yes that is the correct routing. If you can see the charcoal canister the lid is actually labeld as to where each of the lines go also.

Yeah. I can see it but I don't think mine says. I'll check again. So that port that I am pointing to is the right one? Thanks!

You need to remove the canister and shake it. If it doesn't rattle it isn't any good. The charcoal media will clump together and won't filter the vapors like it should.

Just a heads up....

Re: Charcoal Canister Lines

Well I looked in all the threads and cannot find the canister anywhere. The part number on mine is a little different than the ones listed in the above threads (GM part number for 1972 is 7030541. Standard Products part number is CP1045) so I thought I would try that too. The part number on mine is 7030605. It cannot be found either.

I looked in the FSM to see if it could be taken apart (I didn't think it could as it has to be sealed tight), and it only gives directions on how to replace the filter on the bottom of it. Not much help on replacing the actual charcoal with pet supply charcoal.....

Has anyone used a "newer" canister from another car/truck? I really don't want to by pass it as it obviously has a purpose!

Thanks for your help guys!

Re: Charcoal Canister Lines

After a couple of hits on the work bench and it seems to make a faint sound of "sand" being in there. Is that the sound I am looking for?

At least until I find a replacement?!!

I don't know enough about them to be much more help.... I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything to run it for a while.

Re: Charcoal Canister Lines

Sorry I do not want to hijack the thread, but seeing as how the Charcoal Canister experts are responding...

...a few more newb questions: What is the exact purpose of the charcoal filter? And what's the downside of not using one? Is it simply to control gas fumes? Mine is disconnected from the canister to the carb, but still attached at the other connection, which I believe is coming from the fuel tank, not sure.

TIA! -Ed

Re: Charcoal Canister Lines

Takes gas fumes and puts them back to the carb to be burnt. Also is supposed to control "gassy" smell in and around ur truck. It is an emmisions control device
