painless transmission swap?

Since the weather seems to be becoming spring like I am looking to tear into parting out the '87 V20 farm truck to get it out of the way.

My '73 K20 currently has a very leaky TH350 with a NP203 that has a 2wd conversion done previous to me.

So my thought is take the fairly recent rebuilt TH350 and the NP208 out of the '87 V20 and put them in the '73 K20.
Obviously the bell housings should be the same bolt pattern...but are the splines different on the NP208 vs the NP203, is there any electronics/computer on the '87 TH350 I'll have to deal with differently than the '73 TH350. The splines shouldn't be an issue the driveshafts of the both trucks are good and both are regular cab long beds.

I'm just trying to make sure my ducks are in a row before it tear in and find a surprise I didn't expect.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: painless transmission swap?

Converting the 73 back to 4x4?

I'd plan on taking everything from the 87. IE: trans, transfer case, shift linkage, brackets, cross-member (may need to be re-drilled) and drive shaft.

The trans should bolt up if you use the 87 torque converter and flex plate. I'm assuming both are 350 V8's. No electronic that I'm aware of unless it has the locking TC.

BTW - is the TH350 in the 87 swapped in? I thought they were out of production by then.

Re: painless transmission swap?

NP203 has a conversion kit from full time to part time. It just makes the transfer case have a 2wd mode.

Both are 350 V-8s.

My father knew the original owner and the transmission was never swapped, my father and I pulled it and had a local shop rebuild it several years ago. I'm pretty sure it's a TH350, I can look at the pan the next time I'm at the farm.

Re: painless transmission swap?

In 1987 the engine should be throttle body and have either a 700 r4 or a th400. If its the 700r4 you have to buy the core cto brackets and reset your TV cable or you will burn it up. 700 has a electric lockup but trans will still function fine with no electronics connected. The th400 uses an electric kick down that if not hooked up you won't be abe to kick down to second for passing unless you manually downshift. You will also have to get conversion u joints since your axles probably have different size yokes.

I know for sure it is not a 700r4, there is no definately overdrive.

Ok so it turns out it is a TH400 in the 87.
