How hard is it to change out the power window motor or should I change motor/regulator? My pass window wont go up or down and im getting power to the motor but I believe it is bad. Any suggestions?

Re: Power window motor issue

It's not that difficult but you have to remove the whole assembly to replace the motor. Since the cost is not much different you might want to just buy the whole regulator/motor assembly and have it ready for the job. This would limit downtime. But if you want to save a few dollars and can have the truck down while you figure out whats bad then just take it apart, and see whats broken and go from there. If you've never done this before, plan for about 2 hours. A seasoned tech can have one in/out in about 30 minutes.

In my shop we usually replace the whole assembly, because it takes additional labor time to swap the motor and much of the time there is a problem in the regulator that messes up the motor, and we don't want the risk of having a "comback".

On Rockauto motors are about $40, and regulator/motor assembly about $60. That's Dorman (which are fine). AC Delco costs more.

Re: Power window motor issue

Just changed out motor/reg assembly out on '01 Suburban back door a few months ago. Only took about 30 minutes. DO NOT buy the cheap $40 ones, after about 10 roll up/down at the most, it has quit...POS China junk! Spend the extra $ and get a good one.
