cruiser

what is a good engine to use in a '68 shortbed for highway cruising? no stoplight to stoplight racing, just fun cruiser. I found a 402 BB that I wanted but not sure about picking it up because a lack of a overdrive transmission to go with it. I also considered a Olds 403 & 200 4r because i had one in my gbody cutlass that was nice. what GM combos y'all have for cruising?

250 3 speed manual cruises just fine for me!

Its hard to beat a 350 small block, paired with a Turbo 350 and 3.08 rear end. For more power a 3.73 is great, but I would recommend an overdrive transmission for highway speeds.

IMO the rearend will be first in that equation, transmission a very close second (the right trans I would ranked in front of rearend), and engine third.
Personally I would look at a 700r4/4L60 with 3:73 rear gears, and then a small block of some sort.

700r4 with 3.73s is great for highway and acceleration. If you spend most of your time in town, turbo350 with 3.07s is good, but leaves a lot to be desired for acceleration.

If it were my money, 700r4 with 3.73.

vortech 350 engine, 700R4 trans , 3:73 rear gear, 28" tall tires.
loves the highway, pulls my bass boat with no problem.

Just curious, has anyone used the three series carrier with the 3.73 gears? I know there are ring and pinions that will fit into the smaller carrier, just curious if you folks changed to the bigger carrier or how you did your swap from 3.08?

Actually I have not installed it yet. I'm still run the original offset oil bath air cleaner. Eventually I'm gunna install your old one.
