My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I have found out I'm not as young as I use to be. It took me tow day to remove the engine out of my truck. Not that it was hard, my body couldn't take it. I'm so thank full for southern trucks and no rust. My truck is a 1986 and I still was able to unbolt the exhaust Y pipe from the manifold with a 3/4 ratchet and extension. I only used a impact wrench on the engine mounts.
The engine bay is a real mess. Its going to take a bunch of work to get it back in shape. But now is the time to do it. I'll have engine picture's later today after I pull it apart and see what I have or don't have. Fingers crossed.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

Things have not gone my way this afternoon. After removing the Heads I found No. 6 cylinder piston top has a chunk missing and the cylinder wall has deep groves. Also looks like No. 4 piston is getting ready to come apart also. Or some of No.6 made it's way over and bounced around in there for a while.
I would say this engine for the time being is going in the corner of the shed.

Hey Honey! I need some money for a crate engine. That's going to go over great. Another month of being on the list.

Well after thinking a bit and checking prices. Crate engines right now are $ 1500.00 from Summit with free shipping. But me being a penny pincher. I'm going to pull it all the way down and have it checked tomorrow or when they can get to it. And then see what my options are.
In the mean time, I can be cleaning and reconditioning the engine compartment.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

After do some research I'm going to go with the 290 hp Crate engine over the 190 hp. Being my truck is a C20 and I ask a lot from it in the short time I have owned. And will be doing a fair amount of towing, bigger is better.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

Update. My GM crate engine is on its way. A 350, 290 HP black beauty. I'm still working on the engine compartment. I have removed everything that unbolts almost. Cleaned and scrubbed like crazy. I had the engine oil cooler hoses rebuilt, they charged me $75.00. The new hoses would have been close to $200.00. I did find a 2 inch by 4 inch area of rust in the body seam near the brake booster, just to the left of it. Not sure it I'll be able to mig a patch in there with out catching the inside on fire. Need to check it out some more. But hope to do some spray painting today. I'm using a semi gloss black enamel with hardener. I'll post more pic's as I go.

Cool I hashed around the crate eng swapping from a 6 but found a complete 4 bolt local builders putting it together. the cam decisions tough. It will be about a month getting excited to put it in. Good luck looking forward to hear how turned out.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

Wrapped up painting today. I use a spray gun maybe once every couple of years. So a few mistakes can be found. I have to respray the top of the core support when it dries good. That's where most of my mistakes are.
My new engine arrived last night, the owner of the speed shop delivered it. I still have some parts needing cleaned and painted before installing the engine.
My rebuilt oil cooler lines will look nice. Not sure on my exhaust system yet, but I have a good start. I'll add pictures as I go.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I just noticed your license plate, no wonder you're such a meticulous cleaner. Nothing makes an engine compartment pop like Chevy orange. I've never had a shiny new black crate engine to make that call, so I can't say for sure how I would go, but I know black engines look boring to me unless there is lots and lots of bling on top of it. It's going to look awesome regardless.

There is a place here in Jacksonville Fl. that rebuilds all kinds of hoses. From the very smallest to the biggest I have ever seen. They thought my hoses where A/C lines. I had them add 2 inches. I paid $75.00 for the rebuild.
If you need there contact info I will post it up.

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

My new trans cross member arrived. Looks good, I'll have nice high and tight duals.
Also found a crack in the P/S pump bracket while cleaning up for repaint. A little touch up with the mig and grinder.

I bought from POL. It is made for 63-72 chevy trucks. But it fits under my truck just fine. I had to drill new holes. I also filled the old holes in with a plug and then welded. The part # TCM6372, $ 79.99

Re: My engine oil leak fix thread. I hope.....

I just up dating where I'm at with my new engine install. I have been making a bunch of changes and adjustments to my first laid out plans. After painting the engine compartment semi-gloss black. I didn't like the way the inner fenders handled dirt and being cleaned. So I repainted them gloss black along with the lower section of the firewall from the body seam down.

I reworked the engine wiring harness that runs across the back fire wall then down across the right side intake manifold. What I did was reroute the harness to run lower along the fire wall then down on top of the right frame rail. Covered in black Split Convoluted Conduit just like it came with. The only wires on the engine will be heated choke and aftermarket gauge wires. Which will be run from the front by the Alt.

I have painted the engine brackets several times till this last time. I shot them with the paint gun gloss black. I also painted the underside of the hood gloss black after a bunch of prep time.

The gear box has been removed and sealed, cleaned, painted and reinstalled.
P/S pump has been resealed also, painted and put back together. I rebuilt the steering intermediate shaft.
Installed rebuilt oil cooler lines, flushed oil cooler. Made bracket for P/S cooler from (Chrysler NS body mini van) Made brackets for transmission cooler.

So hope fully I can get around to installing the engine this week. If Something doesn't happen around here. Ken
