LS swap with manual transmission

Hello there,

I have a 66 c10 shortbox that I bought a 6.0L lq9 for and have installed a comp cam, ls1 heads and likely going to put a carb kit on it. Has anybody installed an LS engine with a 5 or 6 speed manual? I'm looking to keep my bench seat and that's the main obstacle. Currently I have a 355 ci (375hp) engine with a T5 Camaro (s10 tailstock swap) trans in it. Looking for a trans that I can beat on a little. I'm expecting the finished motor to have 450-500hp. Any suggestions for transmissions would be great thanks.

Re: LS swap with manual transmission

The LS1's and LS2's did come backed with the T56's but you will have to relocate the shifter to be able to keep your bench seat. A Tremec TKO500 or 600 would work equally as well, but there again the shifter will need to be moved from the standard location. There are kits available to relocate the shifter in either trans.

The T56 will require a hydraulic clutch, which I do make a conversion kit for, for the '63-'66 trucks.

I have a 5.3/T56 combo with bucket seats. The shifter would not clear the bench seat in the stock location. There are kits to move it to the inspection plate location, but it takes almost a complete teardown of the the trans to put in. There are companies that could rebuild one, beef it up for you, and do the shifter mod at the same time.

Re: LS swap with manual transmission

there's the option of mating it an older style transmission such as a muncie.

i am putting a carb L92 in a older transam with a muncie m-22, its pretty straightforward.

Re: LS swap with manual transmission

Calvin,

I put a T56 / hydraulic clutch in my 65 with bench seat. See threads referenced in my build. I really enjoy the T56. Several years in use, no trouble.

Good luck, TR
