Tire Dry Rot
My frame is almost 100% complete (suspension, brakes, etc.), but I dont have tires and rims yet. My question is if I buy rims and tires to get frame rolling, but I probably wont be finished with the restoration for a couple of years. Will the tires dry rot just sitting in my garage.

Re: Tire Dry Rot
Unless it will be sitting for 5 or 10 years... I don't know about "dry rot" but I would put the frame on jackstands to alleviate any flat spots in the tires.

Re: Tire Dry Rot
I would just put some cheap rollers on it until you are closer to driving it.

I was reading about that a while back. It said that the newer tires come with a coating on them to prevent deterioration. If you wash the coating off and don't use them they will deteriorate. Movement of the molecules in the compound of the tire when driving keeps them pliable, and that is why newer used tires deteriorate so quickly and develop age cracks when they are not used. Older tires are not as prone to deterioration because they have more actual rubber in the compound, whereas the newer tires have more synthetic material and less actual rubber in them. I agree with Eric, just put some cheap craigslist tires on it while you are working on it.... LockDoc
