67-72-----4x4

when it comes to running gear (transfer case ) were they all the same or was one year better than the other?

I believe the np205 transfer case was in most 1969's and all 1970-1972's.
The transfer case before that was the Rockwell t221.
In a lot of people opinions the 205 is the superior transfer case.

71-72 with the NP205 transfer case and disc brake, open knuckle front axle is probably the best choice.

I agree. The NP205 is as heavy as a tank, but it's as solid as one too.

And the open knuckles are great. My 72 Blazer turns tighter circles than my 95 Z28.

The 205 in my opinion is the best transfer case they have made. Its basically rock solid and indestructible for most applications.

+1 best oe supplied case ever made. Cast iron gear drive bliss I guess the only complaint some have is the not so low, low range but you can't break them.

Absolutely, but there are different versions. Auto, standard, 1/2 ton, one ton in later model trucks, slip yoke rear in later blazers. You just need to know what you plan on doing and get the correct version for your application ! Also the correct adapter, and 205 crossmember !

The all gear rockwell T221 used through 69 is probably just as strong as the np205 but its harder to get parts for.

Yes sir that is exactly right. I personally don't have complaints on the 205 low range but know some do, thus the 205/203 doubler. It's low enough for everything I need it to do in stock form.

Absolutely correct. Every year was available with a bulletproof transfer case. Very few had the inferior Dana20, and only in some 3spds, which is also a lame transmission for 4wd application. if you swap, do yourself a favor and get the whole ball of wax. as far as I know only '69 Blazers got the NP205 and '70 was the first year for the full line. All '70s had open knuckle front axle,too. When the axle changed to open knuckle, so did the steering. all this interchanges as well. You can also just as easily swap front end, steering, and transfer case/transmission combos from any later solid axle GM 4wd. 2:1 is as low of gearing I have evr needed. I don't drive on boulders. That's what legs are made for

I found a 72 1/2 ton with auto and cast iron transfer case, would that be original to 72

If it's original it would be a TH350 & NP205. If nothing has been changed, and it's a 72 !

Just google NP205 (New Process 205) and hit images, you should find plenty of pic's to help you identify. Be aware there is subtle differences in an NP205 and an NP203 on the case.

My 72 is a 350/350 with a NP205, standard equipment.

The 205 is a beast but it is not the strongest. The bearing supports are aluminum so it will flex under a lot of torque. Sled pullers blow the crap out of them. The newer NP271/273 case is a lot stronger than the 205. The 205 is very adequate for most applications though.

The rockwell is about the toughest you can get but loud loud (straight cut gears) just don't run them low on oil
