'62 Belair yard find

Randomly found a scrap yard outside of Austin the other day. Guy has a ton of classics. ...And nearly all of them run.

Anyway. Ended up taking home a '62 Belair. 327/glide, factory air. Had been parked for a while, but started right up. Factory AM radio works, and the factory air even works! I scored big time on this wagon.

About 15 mins later back at the shop.

Then we started messing with wheels. I'm in love with the 5th gen SS wheels on this car. Just waiting for spacers to come in.

Spent a few hours cutting the front springs (2 coils). Shocks were toast, so picking up new KYB's tomorrow morning. Naturally the sway bar end links snapped, so new poly end links.

Car has some rust, and a bad floor pan. New pan will be here tomorrow, along with some new carpet. This gives me something to do while I wait for my PB rear kit to show up for the '65.

Looks good! I can't believe how popular the old wagons are. 15 or 20 years ago you couldn't give one away....

Re: '62 Belair yard find

I love wagons. I am very embarrassed to say that back in the day, we parted out many a wagon for just the engine and the front sheet metal so we could put it in our 2drs. Oftentimes, the rest of the car was in awesome shape, it's just that like LocDoc said, you couldn't give one away. From the front doors back, very little interchanged with anything else.

Re: '62 Belair yard find

Yep, I love them too!

The Volvo wagon in the second picture makes 500+rwhp on low boost. If I turn it up on e85, it would likely make 700. I built it two years ago for fun. It's a big single turbo LS 5.3/6 speed car.

It's hard to believe that someone would have junked that even if it does have some rust. They must not know how popular wagons are now.

Re: '62 Belair yard find

Awesome wagon! We are using some of those 5th gen wheels on my Father's convertible. We had an issue with the center cap popping out without a spacer on the front. How big a spacer are you running? And what size front tire is that?

Re: '62 Belair yard find

Just mocked them up off a buddies 3rd gen LS project.

Spacers are 2", and they sit perfect in the front. I'll get tire dimensions next time I'm at the shop.

I'm still on the hunt for a set of these wheels for the wagon. I can find them everywhere in Dallas/Houston for $4-500, but nothing in Austin :/.

Cut 2 coils on the front and installed some new KYB's.

Also someone mounted the mufflers underneath the front floor pans for some reason. I plan on moving them soon.

Going to put the factory A/C compressor back on, some 5th gen wheels and take a coil or so out of the rear and drive the piss out of it.

Eventually when I finish all the C10's, i'll LS swap/bag it.

Boy isn't that the truth. If you drove a wagon when I was a teen everyone knew it was mom and dads car.

I've been keeping an eye out for a early 60's or older 9 passenger project wagon for quite awhile. Something the grand kids and me can play with. I have found zero good deals lol.

Great find on this wagon ... Ill keep checking out your progress.

You got any more wide shot pictures of it with the Camaro wheels on?

Snapped one last night, but it makes the front end look a lot higher than it actually is.

You think that's bad.
I bought a "military order" 68 1/2 ton short bed step side truck that still had all the olive drab green paint in place and cut it up to make a trash haul trailer years ago. it was radio delete, single sun visor, stripped down with nothing added. The little six banger had thrown a rod was all that was wrong with it.

I kinda hate myself a little over that one.
