Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
I am wondering what you guys have done to lift your cab on your own with a cherry picker engine hoist? Also wondering if this is possible with the bed? Also while bed is off what simple things are you using to store it on so the bottom sides don't get damaged, or would it be better off to remove the whole box side and set them in the corner?

Don't know about the cab, but I did my bed that way. The previous owner installed eyelets that have since been removed, but it sure made the job easier

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
There are some pics on this site about engine hoist cab lifting.
A couple of weeks ago I made a fixture to lift my LWB bed. Works perfect. Similar in design to a production one below, 1/3 the price. Also made a rolling cart for the bed to rest on while working on the truck. Rolls back over the rear end for storage. No real pic of it though. Barely see it in the pic below. Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
I'd make the parts in red from the pics in posts, 4 and 6 from 2x4s sandwiched together. Why 2x4s? Cheaper than 4x4s and the knots are less likely to line up.
I use "outdoor wood star drive" torx (Lowes/HD) screws that have a sort of self tapping feature and carriage bolts for big stuff. When the jig is no longer needed, run the screws out and save. Reuse the wood. |

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
No paved ground makes the engine hoist impossible so I used the tractor. Eyelets in the mounting holes allows easy pick-up with nylon straps.

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
I BUILT MINE SIMILAR TO CUSTON/10 BUT I USED WOOD. WORKS LIKE A CHARM. IT LIFTS HIGH ENOUGH TO SET ON FLAT BED TRAILER. JUST MAKE SURE YOU CREATE A NOTCH FOR THE BOOM OF THE CHERRY PICKER TO REST IN.

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
The lift in post 4 is nice, but won't work on a stepside due to the way they are designed.

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
I copied an old set of camper jacks a buddy of mine has. About $100 if I remember right. Work like a charm. I lift the cab or bed up about a foot and stick some blocks under to keep it up, then set it back down. Then I scoot them out a couple feet on each side and slide 2 4X4's under and pick back up. That way I can either set it down on a dolly or actually drive my trailer under it and set it down on the side boards.
I used my hoist before with a made bracket but like this control better. I put little boat winches from harbor freight on and crank up a few inches then move to the other side. Piece of cake.

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
I did mine off and back on by myself, and with glass installed when putting back on. would of been nice to have a helper standing by though.

Re: Lifting shortbox truck bed and cab with cherry picker engine hoist
I used a hoist and straps for my bed. I have a gravel driveway so I got it lifted and drove the tuck out from under it.
