What are you folks using to clean the inside of the truck intake?

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

Great thread as I was going to start one today. Can they be placed in a hot water parts washer? Or course with all the little parts and sensors removed.

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

I used some shop towels and a tooth brush, dipping them in seafoam and a little scrubbing.

Will a hot water parts washer hurt it?

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

The manifold itself, probably not. Keep in mind its plastic, but stands up to engine temps regularly. Most parts washers are only "warm", so warping/distortion should be a concern.

That being said, the little seals, and sensors mounted on the manifold won't be as happy. I left all that stuff on mine when I cleaned it, aside from the seals which were being replaced.

Beside map sensor what else is there?
I have looked over it and can't seem to find anything that would hurt of it got wet.

I cant see anything that you would hurt....I stripped 1 down like that & took it to the car wash. A little super soap ,inside & out, & a high pressure rinse... Nice & clean Longhorn

My only thoughts are what if you knock something loose and you put it back on the engine and it is sucked into the engine, will it burn it !!

I left all my DBW stuff on, so there's that. The EVAP technically, if you care about it.

Purple Power + hot water and a little scrubbing with a tooth brush will make it look brand new.

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

I put it in a parts washer at about 180*. It cleaned up great just had to use a little carb cleaner and a towel and the runners cleaned up great.

Its the big thing that usually sticks out of the top of the manifold. Has a line running to it.

It actually doesn't matter if it works for most of us, but the emissions guys keep it.

Was the parts washer the same one the machine shop uses for cleaning engine blocks?

Not sure if it is a machine shop one but you could put an engine in it. We have it at my work. They can put just about anything in it.

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

My concern was the amount of heat it produces and warping of the composite intake

It's only 180*. The engine bay is way hotter I think.

Talking Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

I sprayed mine in the drive way and soaked it good in Purple power then scrubbed and washed it again inside and out.
I've got another intake I plan to shave sometime and see if I can do it right.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

Any trans shop has a heated washer that will work fine. I got one washed for $10 and it looked new when done. Takes less than 10 minutes.

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

I took mine to the trans shop that does my work and asked him to put it in his "dish washer" and he said it would make the outside look great "but would not do much for the inside" !

I am going to the machine shop that I have some work done and get his opinion.

Was the carbon deposits cleaned from your runners?

Re: Cleaning Truck 5.3 Intake plenumn

It should be clean in and out. Works very well at removing all the pcv injected sludge. You won't be sorry. Be sure to remove the o rings that mate to the head surface if you are doing a f body intake. The truck ones are part of the intake gaskets.
