Windshield Install question

I have searched the archives and found many tips and tricks but alot of different methods.

Do you need to put a sealant down first before installing windshield?
I have a new windshield, new rubber seal from GM, and the whole cab was stripped and painted. So the windshield area on cab is like new. The rubber seal is the 2 piece kind having that lock ring to install after.

So again. Do you need to seal the gasket in place?

Any other tips would be helpful.

I've watched that before. At 5:21 it says they are doing a dry install with no sealant for video purposes. But I don't if you need sealant when everything is new or just need it for replacement.

I guess I didn't catch that part. I know when I watched it before, I took it you didn't need the sealant. But thinking about it, you would need it to keep the water out, because water will find away around that rubber seal.

We didn't use any sealant when we did mine. Somebody had used blobs on sealant in the lower corners previously, and over time, water settled there and put large rust holes in the body underneath the weatherstripping.

I use Sil-Glyde on the seal but no "Sealant". I don't get leaks unless there are other issues like rust holes.

I didn't use any special tools at all. Couple of flat blade screwdrivers and some rope.

The glass and gasket can be installed with a piece of string and a plastic spudger.
wrap the string around and pull straight in.

I used a wide flat blade screwdriver with spray lube on it and it worked almost as easily as the special tool. All you have to do is spread the opening with the wide flat blade, and follow closely with the other hand and press the locking strip in place. I think the whole windshield change out on my '86 took a half hour and that was taking pictures along the way. I was mad at myself for putting it off for so long because I thought it was going to be a major fight and it wasn't at all.

Factory installed with no sealant. LMC has a nice tool for 12 bucks (?) that makes installation a breeze.

I installed the windshield today without the tools. Pain in the ass but I got I got it done. One thing that I had a problem with was the bottom of the glass not seated completely on the bottom which made the top part a little challenging but its in. Next time I'll use the tools maybe...

So I ordered the tools and they should be in next week. Would installing using rope be best or not using rope? I have seen videos on both and both don't seem too bad.

One of the videos I saw said to
Have the rubber installed on the perimeter of the cab and then work with the glass from the bottom up. It worked for me but I had to patient with the top corners.

I did try to put it on the window at first and there was a lot of slack and it honestly was getting frustrating and not to mention working with tape, rope etc. but that's how I did it and I was a first timer without the tools. I'm so cheap. Lol

So I finally got around to installing windshield. It went really well. Although I didn't get the locking ring in yet. The windshield is in! The hardest part was putting the new seal in. Was a royal PIA! The glass was easier than I thought it was going to be. Like someone mentioned before. I was hesitant all these years and never dove into it. But now that I have. It's a piece of cake. The plastic sticks I bought were the best investment. Hopefully the lock ring goes just as easy.Thanks for all the help. Will keep you posted on the lock ring.

Hello all, I'm at the point I need to install my wind shied and have a question
I have done the rear with the rope method many times, but am curious is the wind shield easier with the rope method (seal on the glass then install to cab) or where you put the seal on the cab and then install the glass in the shield with tools?

Just curious which method to use as I do not have the tools and will get them if that is easier.

I was like you. I have installed many back windows before. Never with rope though. For the windshield I put the seal in first then put the glass in and worked it in. I didn't want to mess with rope. I only used the plastic sticks to help. If you follow one of the links above. You will see "what other people have bought" and that's where I saw them. They worked out great. I haven't gotten to the locking ring yet so I can't comment on that. It went way easier than I thought.

Just be patient on the top corners. I used about 8 of the plastic sticks to pry like a bike tire going on a rim. Then with pressure it popped right in.
