Fuel Filter Fitting Issue...

Hello again all!

So, in the process of changing my fuel filter, I noticed that the carb threads were about 90% stripped from somebody cross threading it... It's just lightly threaded now with a piece of towel stuffed in there to catch leakage, how would you guys recommend repairing this? Is the carb screwed, or can new threads be cut and a slightly larger fitting be put in? It's a 1981 Rochester Q-Jet with the in-carb fuel filter...

Adding to this, I have a FRAM external filter, so the standard 2-part fitting can be eliminated, and a custom hose-end fitting can be put in, to prevent this crap from happening in the future... I'll be switching to an Edelbrock Performer carb soon too... But y'all let me know your thoughts on what to do...

there are only 2 fixes for your situation. first the obvious one replace the carb.
back in the day a company called Tomco used to make a self tapping oversized fitting to cut new threads on the way in. It worked pretty good. but it is recommended not to put a filter in there after repair taking it off most likely will destroy the threads and seal. You would have to use an external filter at that point. They used to have a couple of different levels of repair. There was the O/S self tapping and an O-ring type the did not rely on threads. I have used both styles hundreds of times over the last 40+ years. Since the death of carburetors I am not sure the company is still in business.

Yeah, as I said, I'll be putting an independent inline fuel filter on, and completely eliminating the in-carb filter. I'll see what a shop would charge to do that... Shame that had to happen, but **** happens with old hot rods like these!

That's perfect... I'll investigate on that, all this has to be is a good quality, temporary fix, as the engine will be getting pulled soon, and a bunch of new stuff is getting put on. I appreciate your input, buddy!

ya used the self tapping one haven't seen one in yrs. Looked at that link the oring one looks interesting what keeps it in ? What strips those are cranking down on fuel line without holding nut make a thin wrench,

81GMCSierra1500 your carb should use this1- inch x 20 oversize fitting.
They are proud of that part see if you can find it cheaper.

the o-ring style is held in with a set screw you have to drill the main body. They are generally for when the oversize does not do the job or it fails from the same problem as the original. which is not using a 1 inch wrench to hold the fitting while tightening the fuel line.

Oreilly's used to have some carb thread repair back in the day. Brown bottle approx 2.5 inches tall with a red cap. It had a brush inside. It too worked best with an extrernal filter... I used in many times with good success.

Used quadrajets are all over Ebay for $20-$40 and you can likely find one with a good inlet nut. Or, if your carb is not in good shape, buy a rebuilt carb with no core supplied.
