Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

So pulling my 305E V6 soon. Got all electrical, cooling, and fuel disconnected. Exhaust has been separated. And I believe I have everything except the transmission separated. Just making sure I don't have any hang ups disconnecting the engine from the transmission. So I need to pull the inspection cover, and thats where I will find the remaining 2 bolts that hold the SM420 to the engine? I can see 2 from the outside but not sure what else needs to be loosened. Anything on the flywheel/clutch that needs to be loosened before I pluck out the engine?

Make sure your engine hoist can handle the weight of that V6.

That part I have covered. Bought a new one and have used it to pull Cummins engines (crazy heavy - like 2 V6's).

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

Yeah them boys are heavy! I think the Cummins was 1100lbs dry but with all the junk on it that was heavy heavy.

So back to the original questions: what all should I be disconnecting between the engine and transmission to make sure I don't hang up on anything.

Power steering lines
Auto trans, torque converter bolts
Ground wires from cab to backside of the head.
Motor mount bolts

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

The two bottom bolts come out from the inside of bell house. You may need to support the trans in some way , the bell is only supported side to side and not front to back. Not sure if the drive line would keep it up or not.

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

Ok thanks for the information. So I get the 2 bolts on the outside of the transmission and 2 inside the bell housing. After that the engine and transmission should separate?

Its been awhile, but I believe the GMC V6 bellhousing has extra bolts that attach to the engine from the inside behind flywheel.

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

I just pulled mine and YES two bolts from inside bell housing and YES you have to put a floor jack under the trans. remove clutch slave or at least the line to it the two bolts in the mounts under the housing and 4 in the front mount brackets unless its like mine mounts were broken you also need to pull the core suport i did not and should have the V6 is long with the bell and front pulleys on it and there really is not enough room to pull it straight up and out

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

BigSix:
I am confused. Are you pulling the engine and bellhousing without the transmission? I assume the four bolts you are talking about are the transmission to the bellhousing bolts?

Are you planning to pull off the front end? When I pulled my 305e, I pulled off the front end and pulled the engine, transmission and bellhousing all at one time and replaced it the same way. It is a lot easier cleaning everything up, repainting, etc. that way. The front end is designed to come off in one piece with a plug to disconnect the harness from the firewall. Here's a picture of my engine on replacement ( I upgraded to a 351 V6). The 2X2 in the picture was my way of "steering" the engine to the mounts since I replaced it by myself.

Hope that helps.

Steve

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

Steve, that does help. So you suggest taking the front clip off instead of trying to snake it out with the hood just removed?

Yes I was intending on separating the engine from the transmission and pulling them 1 by 1 but your way might be better.

To remove the clip like you did what bolts am I taking off?

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

Sorry I should also ask - would it be a ton harder to just pull the grill and front fascia parts but leave the inner fenders, fenders, and hood? I'd love that stuff there for when I'm routing new engine stuff.

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

just remove the rad and the hood and it should come out with out the trans. you will either have to drop the trans or support it somehow and I believe that it would be easier to drop the trans.
if you remove the front clip remember or mark down where all the shims go.If you have any rust issues at the bottom of the fenders or rad support; they will more than likely need repairing before you put them back as the bolts were more than likely rusted in. you may have broken some off or twisted up some rotten metal. one thing usually leads to another

Re: Pulling the V6 - Just a Couple Pointers Needed

Ok good to know.

I once somehow installed a Jeep 4.0 and 2wd AX15 through the bay of a Jeep Comanche...all in one swing...even though this GMC is bigger and the engine is shorter for some reason I just don't think I could pull the engine and transmission attached together.

BigSix:
Here is a post where we discussed this topic recently. Second post has my summary on pulling the front end.
