intermediate shaft questions
A question for the experts? On 69 -72 trucks with factory tilt power steering, the intermediate steering shaft is installed with a preload spring and large washer at the connection between the column and the intermediate shaft. I have noticed that some install an after market shaft without this preload spring and washer. Does this create any issues with the operation of the steering column or shifting.
Thanks in advance |

Re: intermediate shaft questions
GM didn't spend money on things it didn't need to. Unless the aftermarket ones somehow obviate the need for it, it should be there -and- be properly adjusted per the shop manual.
These trucks aren't made of billet, gotta have slack between the frame and your hands somewhere!

Re: intermediate shaft questions
-
On the columns that have them, the spring and washer hold the lower steering column bearing in place and the spring applies the preload to the lower bearing, hence the name. LockDoc

Re: intermediate shaft questions
You mention factory tilt power steering, if that is the case then the factory tilts had a lower brg retainer and did not use the spring and washer.

Re: intermediate shaft questions
No need for the spring and washer on tilt columns
