Gas gauge needle bouncing

Hello everybody. I'm usually on the 67-72 page, but I also own a 99 1/2 ton 4X4 Suburban.

As the title states, my gas gauge is moving around quite a bit. I'm thinking it's a ground or sending unit issue, but I figured I'd run it by you guys first before I go chasing it the wrong way.

Appreciate any tips you might have.

Thanks, Jason

Re: Gas gauge needle bouncing

I have 99 Sub 4x4 (156,000 miles). About 2 years ago I had the same issue. I didn't do anything about it. 3 months later the gauge stopped working, so I just kept track of miles on the trip odometer and filled when needed. Last year the fuel pump went out. A new pump with sending unit and new electrical connectors at the pump harness connection point and all was working again. My gas gauge needle does still have a slight vibration though. Maybe the spring in the gauge for the needle fatigues over time. If the needle moves a lot, I'd try replacing the electrical connectors at the pump/sender.

Thanks for the response. My fuel pump was replaced about 30,000 miles ago. I hope it's as simple as a connector. I read that sometimes the sending unit gets fouled up, so I tried some fuel treatment first. If nothing changes I'll dig in deeper.

Things sure move slower here than the 67-72 board. If no one answers a post in an hour or so over there it can get buried pretty fast!

Re: Gas gauge needle bouncing

This may not be your issue but have you checked for a broken baffle inside the tank. If the tank baffle has come loose it will come in contact with the float and cause an erratic needle movement on the gauge.

Just a thought,
Tom
