anyone know anything about k car trannys?

hey guys, sorta pissed off here, my beater might be dead, i was dropping a buddy off tonight and went to back out of his driveway and no reverse, the tranny began to slip about 6 months ago and was progessivly getting worse, then tonight no reverse, 1,2,D work fine then i go to N and its still in gear, then i go to reverse on the indicator and it is in neutral, then park works fine, but its like reverse is missing, do you think my tranny is coooked or is it just linkage or somethin easy to fix? this sucks cause my truck isnt quiet done yet and this was gunna be my winter beater...anyone with knoweldge of these piece of chit cars please let me know what you think

Probably made by Peugeot or Mitsubishi...

No, I don't know anything about them. But, it could be a Peugeot, Mitsubishi or even a Renault transmission. Chrysler was recovering from massively poor financials, and they had deals going on with other manufacturers.

My experience with Mitsu, is not favorable. Chrysler gearboxes, i.e., automatics in FWD, isn't any better. Therefore, I only drive my Chevy, and Toyotas.

Hoooter, thanks...yeah i sorta have been but ive decided to use my money i had stashed for paint and im going to by a 67-72 truck 2wd or 4wd to drive till next spring...just a beater that runs good is all i need, i dont care what teh cancer is like....as a matter of fact im going to look at a 68 chevy long step tomorrow, the add says 350, 4spd, duel exhaust, slotted mags, he wants 18 hun...so hopefully i can scoop that, why not eh...then ill just part it out when my 67 is ready to rock and roll

I have been told if you have foward gears and no reverse it is usually a filter. If you have reverse and no foward its toast.

I am not a tranny guru and I am just passing on what I have heard. If your filter is not to difficult to replace it might be a inexpensive thing to try first.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, AND JUNK THE CAR. THOSE K-CAR TRANNYS ARE SH!#! ONCE THEY GO, YOU USUALLY HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THE GUTS TEAR UP THE CASING, AND THERE'S NO WAY TO REPAIR THEM. MY BROTHER WHO WORKS FOR A DODGE DEALERSHIP IS LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER, AND LAUGHING HIS A@@ OFF!! HE CAN'T BELIEVE ONE OF THOSE K-CARS HAS LASTED THIS LONG. SORRY TO TELL YOU THIS, BUT SOMETIMES THE TRUTH HURTS.

We got lucky with our K car back in the day. It was the wife's first car and we got it for a song. It was actually a pretty clean car too.
Anyhow, do yourself a favor and do the fluid and filter thing first. No more than 20 bucks and you'll probably be back on the road and spinning out in the snow (in reverse of course).
Toss a bottle or two of tranny treatment in there too. It's not like it'll do any damage to it.
While I do love having a beater truck for a daily driver, it can really test your paitents. Mine thrives on neglect, but it is starting to give me trouble on things, and nothing sucks worsr than staying up late, laying in the driveway in the rain trying to thrash to rip a part off the project that your daily driver is needing...just to get to work in the morning.

It worked on ours. Exact same description. No reverse, plenty of forward.
However, in all reality, the tranny is on its last leg and this may not fix it. But it is cheaper than replacing the car, and buying a truck to just get through the winter...kinda sounds like the more expensive way out of the situation. At least you already know the little quirks on your beater right now.
Kinda seems like backwards advice, but I say keep the little sh!it box for a few more months and try this.

LOL! The best theory I have heard as to why most auto trannys have no drain plug is becouse most people would not drop the pan after draining it to replace the filter.
That is one thing i love about the Saturns. I don't know about the new ones, but i remember they had an auto tranny with a 50,000 mile spin on filter for easy serviceing.
Too bad there cars are so fugly and booring huh?

my truck has a drain plug in the pan, doesn't look like an add on plug, the pan is shaped to accommodate the plug, Hey longhornmail, I was changing oil in my 1991 ford 5 spd, and when I took the plug out, it was magnetic, covered in small filings, but it also looked like there was this thick grease on the plug, is there a special magnetic gook you put on the plug to help the plug collect filings?

A hand full of earlier automatic transmissions did in fact have a stock drain plug. If you ever get your hands on one, keep it. If not for you, then sell them on here or even E-bay. People will give an eyetooth to not have to take an ATF bath every couple years.
Most Standards that I have dealt with had the magnetic drain plug. ther than glueing a magnet to the tip of the plug, I don't know about a way to magnitize one. Some one had told me to rub metal on a magnet when wet, bu that seems to be a temp magnetic charge that it recieves.
I always place a small magnet in the tranny pans the first time I pull them. I know many (if not all) automatics had them when new, but it seems most of them are MIA by the time I get my hands on them.

hey guys, i did the filter and fluid, nothing..the pan was clean too, nothing broken....i wonder what i could get for it..maybe 500 bucks and say needs minor tranny work...lol

so your saying the trannys worth more than the whole car LOL hey I put a drain plug in my sons C6, it was a bolt on plug, 15 bucks at lordco
