Classic Parts gas neck grommet problems

Anyone use the filler neck grommet from Classic? I put one on last fall to replace my original aged one, and the new one is DESTROYED after spending a few months on the truck outside! It is completely age-cracked, it looks much worse than the 50 year old one I took off! Just wondering if I got a bad one, or if this is a common issue...

Re: Classic Parts gas neck grommet problems

I bought mine from Chevy Duty (later ClassicParts.com) a long time ago, and it looked mint when I removed it years later and moved the tank under the bed. Don't know if that's the same outfit, or if the quality has deteriorated that much.

That's really disappointing. My original grommet never looked as bad as the one in the photo.

See this sorta thing all the time these days on motorcycle fork boots that are re-pops made out of Chinese Rubber.

They look great when you buy em and they fall apart within a years time....seriously.

Re: Classic Parts gas neck grommet problems

OH NO!

I have a new grommet I just got from CP yet to be installed. Yes, repop rubber parts can really suck these days. Guess I'll be careful taking off the old one.

Does anyone know of a better source?

Re: Classic Parts gas neck grommet problems

I have installed several of these on my trucks from Classic Truck Parts, all are looking good after sitting outside in WI for several years. The one on my tow truck sits facing the sun all year long.

Re: Classic Parts gas neck grommet problems

Unfortunately, the grommet is one part that I don't want to have a patina look.

I'll send an email to Classic and see what they say.

I put mine on one month ago and already cracked and is splitting in half. Looking for the 50 year old one I took off to put back on.

Let us know how they respond Jay. I got other rubber parts from them in a recent order, too; like filler neck hose and wiper blades.

Awaiting the verdict.

When you get these rubber parts that are shizzle try the dielectric grease on them to preserve them ...it works great on window rubbers too..even in Canada

Re: Classic Parts gas neck grommet problems

Give me quality rubber parts. I handled enough silicone grease as a CATV lineman to want to keep it out of as much of my environment as possible.
