Firewall booster/master
Yep, I know I've been asking a bunch of questions lately, but I'm soon approaching the point of having to have made decisions, as they affect things downstream. I'm sure ya'll understand. Besides, I always get the good answers, insight, and advice here.
So - I had had an '80 Camaro booster and master cylinder on my old firewall and want to go back with new on the firewall (like the swinging pedal). Although didn't much prefer the tilt that goes with it. Beside CPP, what have folks used on theirs? I have heard issues with alignment and pedal angle with their kits. Is there another suitable GM combo for disc/disc that comes straight out (not at an angle)? Thanks again for the input. Cheers, Jim |

Re: Firewall booster/master
I know Roger55 had issues with the bracket hitting the booster seal as well as the pedal swing position on his TF, as noted in his build thread. Does anyone (TF guys) know if these issues have been corrected since 2013? Cheers, Jim

Re: Firewall booster/master
Just for knowledge, I'd like to see photos of the changes CPP made for their TF firewall bracket.
If anyone would like to see what mods I made to mine, I detailed them with photos in my build thread. See posts #242, #279 and #416. The last mod in #416 was necessary due to the conflict with the mount holes for the Ididit steering column bracket. And btw, I thought I'd post this shot because I haven't before now. It shows how the firewall mount mod I did looked after welding, smoothing with a little filler and painting. You can't see it with the booster on there but I think it was still worth the time. |

Re: Firewall booster/master
I can see changing out the clunky Camaro tilt for something more appropriate in the truck but if you like the way the Camaro brake setup works why replace it except with shiny new Camaro pieces.
One viable reason for making the brake setup change is that it puts the column in an awkward position due to where the pedal has to be. Bad reason for changing is that "all the cool guys run aftermarket brake setups" rather than reliable and easy to replace/repair factory setups. I ran a booster and mc on the firewall on mine from 81 until I redid the truck in 89 and decided that I didn't like the big chunk of stuff blocking the view of the engine from the drivers side. Worked great but it was terribly ugly.

Re: Firewall booster/master
So.....after looking at this again I can see what roger was talking about. Personally I'm not sure if it's rubbing and if so if it will cause an issue. Mine did bolt to my factory steering bracket with no issues

Re: Firewall booster/master
Haven't adjusted it yet. Not sure. It's a little high right now but I think it will go closer to the firewall. Right now it's about the same height of the factory one

Re: Firewall booster/master
I recently picked up a pedal assembly from a Jeep TJ. I really like how it fits in my 54.
I don't have a booster/master yet, but you can use just about anything you want with it. |

Re: Firewall booster/master
I think cutting the weld on the swing arm, adjusting and re-welding is a better option. Take a look at posts #242 and #279 in my build thread.

Re: Firewall booster/master
Jeep TJ pedals, $30 on Ebay.
Here they are sitting above the factory pedals. Seeming like a good fit to me off hand. I can always modify them if need be. |

Re: Firewall booster/master
I have a 2001 chevy 2500 parts truck, can i use that brake setup for my 51 3600?
can you pretty much use any booster and modify the brackets and pedals? |

I don't see why you couldn't use the booster, though being a 3/4 ton booster it might be trickier to find a suitable master cylinder that fits to it? I am not sure on that one. Might all be the same. As for pedals - it's pretty much just making them fit the truck & your legs. The mechanical advantage / pedal ratio of different setups will change how they perform and how they feel but we're working in the confines of what's available, what's going to fit & these trucks aren't going to the moon, so the ratio isn't a dealbreaker. Besides, most power brake pedal assemblies are around the same leverage anyway.

Re: Firewall booster/master
I'm using a 2003, 1/2 ton booster and pedal on mine with disc/disc and it works great. No angle on the master cylinder. The trick is you need to make your own mount for the pedal pivot but it's only 16 GA. from the factory. No big issue.
