I put a Hurst Indy floor shifter in (3 speed ) and the main part of the shifter is about 2 inches away from where the speedo cable attaches to the trans. I don't have the room to hook it up and even if I did the cable would be right in the centre of the shifter itself. Why would Hurst make something that would eleminate your speedometer? Or is there something else like an elbow gear that I need and if so where can I get this. I am saving up for a good 4 speed right now but it would be nice to have a speedo. Thanks....

cant you re-install the shifter mounting plate a couple inches forward or backwards from where it sits in your opening???

you might be limited there,on slot size on your linkage rods......did you get universal rods w/kit

I just had a close look at it and it would have to be move forward about 3 inches which would put the shift linkage at a pretty steep upward angle. The linkage is universal for many instalations but the instuctions suck big time. Right know it shifts real nice. I know the 70's and 80's GM trucks had a 90 degree bend adapter on the autos. If I can find one of them it may work.

Western Star....I was confused about mine when I first put it in. matter of fact I broke a speedo cable bending it too tight to fix. Hope you can see in the pictures. First set it to mount as far forwar (to the front as you can). Then you run the speedo cable just in fron of the downward shifting arms. It looks like they will hit it when you shift to 1st or 3rd, but they clear.
I don't think this will matter much, but when I replaced my speedometer cable I got the longest stock size available. Gave me a bit more to play with.

It does look wired until you get it in, but she worked great fro me.

Only thing I would recommend is using loctite or a lock nut on the bolts that hold the shifter to the linkage. Mine worked loose after about 6-8 months.

Sorry about the above shot...forgot to rotate it when I resized it. These next two pics show how it was mounted. Least for me it took a while to figure out exactly where I was to mount it. I'm not real quick on the first time with these things sometimes.

Oh ya my cable is long enough. All I have to do is back the clamp off from the frame and create a little more slack.

I found out that the hole that was in the bracket was to far forward and the one at the back made the shifter sit way to close to the bench seat so I split the difference and drilled a new hole and everything works great. Ta Duh and a drum roll. Thanks again...
