Hard starting bbc when hot.
Just picked up a 72 402/400 over the weekend and noticed it barely starts when it gets hot. It starts just fine cold, but hardly cranks at all when warmed up. Any ideas?
Thanks. |

That one confuses this old man.... I have run BB olds, BB caddy, & big inch sb in my truck. a good battery, good set of cables, & a good starter are the ticket. im not tryin to start a fight, but if the fore mentioned parts are in good shape.....I havent seen a problem I have also run headers on the Olds, & the Chev(2 of them in the longhorn)......no sheilds , or remote solenoids....no problem. the 461 Olds ran @ 9.8 on comp ratio, as does the 383 Chev(alum head on the chev helps), but I dont see the problem that many guys have stated......perculated fuel, yes I have seen that problem. Good luck, crazyL

My old Pontyrat did the same thing. It was Ok after I replaced solenoid. The heat shield does help..so I'm told...with the starter & solenoid prematurely wearing out because of heat. I never used one, so I can't say if they would have made a difference or not.

Thanks for everyone's input. I just got the truck and haven't had the chance to check it out yet. I know the timing was off when I got it, had to advance to spot it from popping (HEI). I got several milk crates of parts, and although I haven't gone through them I did notice an old starter. Oh yea, it has headers also.
The shield sounds like a good way to start, not expensive and can't hurt. Thanks again. |

The big block 454 in the vette was factory equipped with a heat shield and a hi torque starter. It does make a difference. It absorbs the radiant heat from the headers as long as there is an air gap between the shield and the starter.

You'll be best off puting a new starter under that new heat shield too. The damage is already there.
I've lost one starter to my headers, and seen plenty more. In the newer Grumman delivery trucks with the GM 6.2/6.5, they come stock with the heat shield on them. |

Definitely do the starter thing. But don't forget to check the timing & advance. Make sure vacuum isn't getting trapped in the hose to distributor & holding the advance to max position. Thermal vacuum switches can do strange things.

This happened with mine too. The timing was advanced too far. I turned it back a few degrees and hot restarts are no problem.

Check to make sure your ground straps are good, a bad ground will overheat the starter also
