Clutch slipping?
Not sure if this makes sense but, when I put the gas peddle to the floor I get no hp to the rear wheels. The tranny or clutch just rev up. There is just enough power to get the truck to go forward but if you stomp on it something just spins and no horse power.
Clutch plates rusted together from sitting all winter? Clutch is fried? I check the fluid in the trany and it is good and brand new. Not sure where to start. Any help would be awesome...

Re: Clutch slipping?
After looking closer I think oil might be the cause. Lots of oil on the trans. Looks like main seal.
"If you've got oil in your clutch, you've got to figure out where it's coming from and fix it. It could be a trans seal, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, or if you're lucky, it's a bad pcv hose that's just dripping down the bellhousing and not on your clutch at all." |

Re: Clutch slipping?
Yeah, friction is essential. If things have been contaminated with oil that bad the clutch and pressure plate will need to be replaced. Flywheel resurfaced too most likely.

Re: Clutch slipping?
Drain the geal oil out of the trans.
Drop the driveshaft. Disconnect the shifter linkage. Remove the 4 bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing. Pull the trans stright away from the bellhousing. Undo the trans/rear engine mounts, and unbolt the bellhousing from the engine. Remove the bolts from the pressure plate, and bring down the clutch. Remove the flywheel and get it machined. When reassembling the clutch be sure to use the alinment tool. Installation is reverse of removal. Oboy it never does end does it....

Re: Clutch slipping?
Getting oil on your clutch disc is just like when a wheel cylinder goes bad and leaks in the brake drum. You have to replace the friction material because the oily stuff will keep it from doing its thing, GRAB.
Plan on a clutch job. checking the oil level while a good idea is not gonna keep the trans from putting power to the rear wheels unless it is super low then of course it could be a problem ,major at that. |

Re: Clutch slipping?
Well they have been together (383 and M21)for over 20 years so I guess it is time. That is 20 cold winters sitting on blocks too.
Main was dripping last fall I guess the winter finished it off. |

Re: Clutch slipping?
Anybody know what happens when it finally "goes"? Can I putt putt home or will I lose all drive?

Re: Clutch slipping?
If the clutch goes? Depends how bad you burn it. Most I've seen can limp home(like 40mph floored). But will heat things up fast and the smell is awful.
