Braces

I have a question about some braces that were in my '56 GMC.

There was a set of braces that went from the top of the firewall on the cab, down to the frame. Can someone tell me what they were for and if they are a necessity? There were also some that went from the firewall to the top of the radiator support.

Thanks!

Re: Braces

can't say anything about the firewall to frame support, that may a gmc thing
the firewall to core support rods are very common on trucks bigger than 3100 half ton
i can only imagine the rods are there to keep the fenders from twisting

this is the rods on my 59 3800 one ton

Re: Braces

Now that I'm back at a computer with the pictures on it, you can see the braces that I'm talking about that go from the firewall down to the frame.

Re: Braces

The Gossip about them is, they were installed in GMC's with V-8's. In my case they did accomplish one they for sure! Ripping out all the holes on the firewall they went into.

Re: Braces

Thanks guys! I don't think I'll be putting those back in then since they seem to rip holes in the firewall.

Re: Braces

I remade mine out of stainless & also instead of the big rectangle washers under the head of the bolt inside the cowl, I made a backing plate to match the back side of the reinforcement on the front.

Re: Braces

Did the GMC's have a death shimmy issue because of all the added bumper weight ahead of the axle???
