starter problem

My jegs mini starter broke the pinion gear retainer. The starter developed a noise sounding like it was hung up or clashing very loudly and buggered up the flywheel teeth some. the starter gear has 9 teeth. the flywheel is a 168 tooth. and the block has a staggered bolt pattern.

the flywheel may be salvageable. can I use a starter from a late '98 chevy 1500 with my set up? fro some internet search it appears so.

Thought I would reply on the result of installing the '98 vortec starter on my GM goodwrench block incase anyone searches in the future for this issue.
It works like a charm. No shims.

AC Delco professional 337-1022. Its new for 113$ delivered. Its small w/ aluminum case fits around the headers great. looks good too.

I ordered one from motor city reman. Part number on the box is 6562n. Works great. I'm thinking it was 78.00

I am using a 96 c1500 starter from autozone, staggered bolt block & 168 tooth flywheel. I shimmed it using some of the "Help" shims that I bought when I purchased the starter. I used a number 2 paper clip to set the gap between the teeth. I had alot of issues until I figured out that the starter needed to be shimmed and the correct mounting bolts (GM part #12338064) need to be used. Engagement has been nice and smooth since.
