How many of you guys have painted with it via rolling it on? I'm going to try it on my blazer. Do I need primer or is it okay?

I'm doing exactly that right now! Painting my K10 by rolling it on with Rustoleum and mineral spirits. Or I might use a Sherwin-Williams paint called "All Surface", another oil-based enamel. From my experiments so far, Rustoleum goes on flatter and dries harder but my Shrwin-Williams store can mix the All Surface into ANY color. Nobody will mix the rustoleum, so you're stuck with the basic colors.

To answer your questions: primer should be used over bare metal or bondo or anything except quality paint that is good. For me, I'm repairing a lot of rust and dents, but the upper half of the truck is good so I'm just paint over that and priming the lower half. I'm scuffing up the existing paint of course, with 220 grit sandpaper.

A couple of pics of a military M101A1 trailer I painted with a small roller and Rustoleum oil base Green. Was not trying for a show quality job. Just did a quick angle grinder wire brush of the old layers of military paint, then rolled on two coats of new. Used a brush in the corners and other spots the roller couldn't reach.

No reason you can't mix your own paint. Just make sure you make enough the first time as it is unlikely you will get a good match on the second batch.

If it is warm when you paint, the paint may start to skin over if you don't hurry.

Thanks for posting that pic, Dead Parrot. Thats the exact color of green I might paint my truck! Good to see it before hand. That is, if I don't go with the Sherwin-Williams which I had them mix up a quart already. Another thing, the SW is twice as expensive. It doesn't dry as hard/fast and nothing I could do would help it lay flat (go to that thread I linked to earlier to see my experiment). So... glad you posted what the green Rustoleum looks like. It's a basic color, timeless.

I rolled my own as well, three coats but did not thin at all. Lots of orange peel and do not care.

I had Home Depot try their best to color match a piece of original paint. This turned out really close.

So the original chevy paint is all there so I can just scuff it and roll it on?

Yes.

I primed where there was bare, and I primed going from dark blue to white.

Well that should be easy enough than! What did you do for a wet sanding process?

I did not do a wet-sanding process.

I did three coats of un-thinned Tremclad. I did scuff between coats.

There is enough orange peel to cause canker sores. That's how I roll. *cough*

I didn't roll it on but I love the mixed it 70/30 7 coats later not to shabby

how long did you wait in-between coats to re-shoot??? im also in the process of shooting my 86 2wd k5so 7 parts paint and 3 parts mineral spirits??? after the final are you planning on clearing/buffing? also what psi did you run with the gun?

20 min between coats , that color is safety red in the sun it had an orangish look loved it, I called it resale red

I just did my truck bed, first used rustoleum rust treatment for any minor surface rust, then light primer, then the rustoleum truck bed coating. That stuff works terrific, and at a mere fraction of the costs of other stuff. Like 40 bucks at walmart. I was surprised at how tuff it is. NOT like spray paint. Goes on like your spreading tar or oil. It paints great though. Very hard finish. You can't scratch it or dig your nails into it. Hard like stone!! As far as spraypaint, rustoleum is great. The key is a clean surface, let primer dry fully, and DONT spray on too heavy!! Use multiple light coats.

If you want it to turn out gorgeous, and roll it on, you're going to have to thin it with mineral spirits, and sand between many, many coats.

Do some Googling for the "$50 paint job" (The Thread that started it all - look for the orange Charger).

I finished the body work on the other half of the truck and painted it all white. I'm going to wait till all the body work is finished to paint the color coat, with the white stripe masked off. First just using white paint all over to seal up the primer and bondo.





The roller method is excellent for getting in between the bed and cab without having to remove the bed. The 4" brush fits perfectly. With an extention on the roller I could get waaaaay in there.



The rustoleum goes on SO much better and flatter than the sherwin-williams All-Surface paint.



So that's two coats of white rustoleum, thinned to roughly 70/30 with mineral spirits (paint thinner) and with a splash of Penetrol paint conditioner (helps it lay smooth, but in my experiments it didn't make a whole big difference, but I bought it already and any tiny bit helps). No sanding yet.

I did my 78 "roll on",with no thinning out,fire red.
It's got some peel,runs,but it's better protected.
And may get another coat this year
